Jannik Top, the world's most aptly named bassplayer. He and Vander are right up there as one of the most powerful rhythm sections to rival Bill Bruford/JohnWetton in King Crimson, Charles Mingus/Dannie Richmond in various Mingus bands and Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison behind Coltrane.

Heavy, menacing, hypnotic, haunting, inexorable like a lava flow. "Every notes must weight 20 tons" said Vander. He seems to be in a sort of chamanic trance. One of the very best Magma live videos. Zeulh not dead!

Hello, friends from France. When I was 15 years old, thirty five years ago, I was listening intently to this wonderful music, here in the United States, and singing along with it in Kobian! How great to see the Vanders, Jannick, Klaus, and a host of young 'uns (well, relatively speaking) continuing to keep this music alive! GREAT VIDEO! THANKS! (P.S. I even saw Magma live in concert twice, here in the USA, in 1999 and 2003!)

I saw Magma live front row 3 days ago and am still shaken and stirred having gazed at this alien that is Christian Vander. His drumming is supernatural, you feel you're staring at and listening to skills not of this earth for over 2 hours. Vander's stellar compositions, the Kobaian chants, the whole futuristic outer space concept are just natural complements to this extraterrestrial's playing. The overall effect is astounding.

Well... him and Jaki Liebezeit. I think Vander and bassist Jannick Top were the greatest rhythm section ever. Just out of curiosity, I once re-tuned my bass guitar to Cello (CGDA on the open strings) like Jannick, but I must say it didn't offer any noticeable benefit. I went back to standard tuning (EADG). Strange...

+The Hermit I just saw Magma live in Philadelphia on March 30th. They most certainly still have it. It was the most intense live performances I have ever witnessed. At one point, Stella Vander joked, "Here is a soft one for you guys." They then go into one of the frenetically paced songs.

@@Yarsh52 I was there and I brought my step-brother who is a choral director. I thought he would appreciate Magma’s singing, and he did! Fantastic concert and Underground Arts is a great venue! This was my third time seeing Magma live….I saw them at Club Wetlands in NYC, at the Patriot’s (War Memorial) Theater in Trenton, NJ, and at Underground Arts in Philly. I’ve been singing along with Magma since 1973!

@@eyerock36 That is amazing! Magma has a new live album coming out soon, by the way. They cover Philadelphia’s own McCoy Tyner with the song ‘For Tomorrow’. They performed some of his other songs live, such as ‘Opus’, but it will be great to finally hear Magma’s take on the choral arrangements.

Stunning. I was blown away when seeing the 'classic' Magma line-up live in 1974. It's so astonishing, yet not astonishing due to Vander's dedication , that they can be doing work as wonderful as this now. See them if you can.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. So many bands lose their edge as they get older, coasting on their ability. But not Vander and the boys--if anything, they play with more fire and skill than in the old days. Whatever Christian is taking, I'll have two! What a phenomenal drummer, and what inspired lunacy. The momentum and drive of this performance is beyond belief. Thanks for posting it.

DINGUE !!!
