A short clip of the French group Magma, jamming brilliantly on the final part of De Futura, from the EPOK 2 Mythes et Legendes DVD, offered by Seventh Records. Magma is a legendary group in Europe, currently celebrating their 40th anniversary. Shockingly, they have only a cult following in the USA, but those who like them are absolute fanatics. I describe Magma as follows: the energy of Otis Redding, the spirit of John Coltrane, the brooding depths of Bartok, and a melange of jazz fusion, hard rock, and classical chorale that creates a magic unique unto themselves. Listen to more of this group, and you will be amazed at the variety and spiritual depths of their music. De Futura Hiroshima is far from my favorite work (a little too dark, not all Magma is bleak!), but a good place to start for those who like to rock out.

Genius Vander. Totally possessed, completely 'in' the moment. It's because of this that I say this is more than music. This is evidence of reaching a transcendental state through sheer focus. I've been fortunate to see other musicians reach this state on stage, it is a beautiful thing to see.

This is a true modern art! It has best of classical, jazz and rock music. And they present it in such unique way, they sound as one...completely serving to music and coresponding to each other perfectly. Vander is yet to be discovered as composer and drummer....because he is ahead of his time.

if you know about these and most people don't... then you know they are one of the best bands of all time. Most drummers do a beat and do fill ins and rolls to fill in. This guy is doing the fill ins and rolls ALONG WITH the main beat. Who does that! Who can.

I saw Magma in tbe mid-1970s at the time of the release of Mekamic Destructiv Commandoh, appearing in the middle of an all day special at tbe London Roundhouse headlined by Caravan. Unbeleivably intense, they had an effect ln the audience i have never seen before, many people blown away and overawed. More intense than King Crimson. Half hour so from Christkan Vander, duetting with himself comvbining falsetto vocals in his own space people (but very teutonic sounding) langhage, with a drum solo of high level technical mastery that seemed about 25 minutes long, all on a dark stage with one green spotlight on his wolf like face, then a 15 minute bass solo from Jannik Top, all glissandos and thundering full chords, and the rest of the set dominated by the extraordinary operatic vocals of Klaus Blasqviz, a tall man in a black beard and long cape with a vocal range fron high falserro to the deep croak of a Tibetan monk, also playing a huge rack of metal percussion , gongs and bells. It was way too intense for people in the audience who were tripping! I saw them again a week later at the Marquee Club on Wardour Street, a very different vibe on a small close club stage but equally intense. Definitely not music for a snowflake! The strongest musical experience of any kind i ever had, followed closely by King Crimson in LA in 1999, the double--trio format.

I saw Magma in London in the mid 80's - I was in my 20's. They blew me away then and now, 30 years later, they blow me away still. Their intensity, their authenticity is unmatched in my opinion. A little bit of a cult so I'm a little wary :) but I still am in awe of them.

If Vander is Buddy Rich's "cosmic twin" he must have changed his mind about matched grip on the drumsticks, Rich had very negative views on it compared to the traditional drumstick grip. As a drummer myself, I never agreed with his arguments against a matched grip. BTW, I have loved Magma/Vander for years, it is great to see them still going strong.

One of the great things about Magma is they prove you don't have to be incredibly loud, distorted, or downtuned to be intense. Much like Zappa, Christian Vander pushes the shit out of his musicians, but doesn't ask of them anything he's not capable of doing.
