4 ways to "safely" work with magma in dwarf fortress.
(2nd most safe)
Digging From Above: If you can find a suitable position above the magma, your miner can dig a channel while remaining above the level of the magma. Be warned, however, that your dwarves might take the ramp down into the magma channel as a shortcut; preemptively designating the channel for restricted traffic is recommended.
(a little more risky)
Carve Fortification: dig directly to the hot stone, smooth the hot stone, then carve a fortification and pray for your miner
(a little risky)
Diagonal Digging: Magma moves more slowly diagonally than orthogonality, giving the miner more time to escape. However, slower flow means you must keep in mind the evaporation. You should dig a smaller channel, wait for it to fill up, and extends the channel by Digging From Above.
Ancient Bridge Magic: (Safest method by far)
An old way to safely breach water or magma. =)
Miners are able to mine out tiles diagonally above them even if there is a bridge over their heads. First you dig out your magma/water tunnel to feed wherever in your fort you need it and dig it right up against the warm/damp stone. Then you channel against the warm/damp stone. Build a magma-safe bridge over the trench, making sure to cover all channels, and then seal off access. Dig a new separate path to access the now bridged-over trench. Finally, designate the warm/damp stone wall on the Z level of the tunnel for mining. Your dwarves will stand on the ramps beneath the bridge but will somehow still mine out the squares diagonally above them, causing the Fluid to flow safely onto the bridge leaving your dwarves unscathed."
Workers that dig into a magma reservoir are not instantly killed as the magma touches them, but they are set on fire, which will kill them very quickly. For this reason, taking steps to ensure there is adequate water available to extinguish flaming dwarves running in random directions is advised before digging into any magma pools from the side. Channeling a single square wide pit across the planned magma pipe one tile away from the wall to breach and filling it with 2/7 water using the pond zone tool is recommended, so the panicking dwarves have no choice but to run through the water, and the water itself turns into an obsidian wall as soon as the magma flows into it.

By the way for everyone watching! The reason the dwarf dies at 5:55 is because TLG mined the corner piece instead of channeling it. Channeling it will slow the magma enough that the dwarf can escape and survive.

I'm going to write this down for a later science experiment, in 0.47. digging diagonal was relatively safe, so lets test.

@@TwistedLogicGaming sounds good! I've had better results with channelling the corner in the latest version vs just digging it. The easiest method by far is the bridge method. it doesn't even need a lever. Just put the bridge on your intended magma channel layer and make it as large as you want it to be, block it off, and then go under and mine out the blocks like you did in the video. You can even use the space under it if you want to live dangerously. I don't think I'll ever tap any other way again, unless of course the bridge method gets patched in the future as it does seem like you shouldn't be able to dig past it from below. :D Very much appreciate this video by the way. The channel has been very helpful as a new player. I've put in 100 hours now and I missed the first 3 days after release lol

Had something interesting happen. Lost all my base to wearbeasts except for 1 person. Each moon, my pop counter goes down to 1 as all the pops transform. The one surviver is locked in the jail, the jailer noble long dead. Where you aware that being in a cage protects the dwarf from attacks? I feels like those stories where the main character is in locked up, unable to escape, hearing lots of fighting, then silence. Stuck in jail, barley living on, were creatures that look like humans, but not so, maybe automation brings food and water to the cage. So many days passing, well past how long they were so pose to be locked up for. Sounds that bring hope (new migrants) quickly fade to the sounds of pain and violence. This caged dwarf remains, half insane, yes they must be insane to be hearing such sounds so often while those bringing food behave like nothing is wrong. Yes, it's best that they stay locked up, that way there insanity won't spread to others. There family will be safe this way. (All the above happened while attempting to set up 100+ floor pump stack to bring lava up while having enemies off, following your guide from a prior video. Wearbeasts are enabled with enemies off, so that was a surprise. It is in the custom settings, but at this point, I have legendary wearbeast fighters that no one can kill. Unsure the point, but sent them to the sights with 'war' as I felt others should be apart of the wearbeast family)
@TwistedLogicGaming
@TwistedLogicGaming Жыл бұрын
Wearbeasts can be rough to deal with now, I believe that a recent change in 0.47 made it so wearbeasts will fight each other. before that we could have a Wearlizard fortress! if you know how to setup a hospital correctly this can prevent a large casualty situation. but a few years ago, a guy on youtube taught everyone wrong. you really need to quarantine everyone who was in contact with the wear creature hahahaha so ill do a video on the correct way at some point. I went over this in my last lets play, however that was a version 0.47 lets play so not many of the new players will be interested to watch. I love that story thank you!

Great tutorial as always! One nitpick though: when talking about building a bridge, you still use the old names for the labors. For anyone wondering, what used to be architect is now Mason and what used to be Mason is Stone Carving. And if that's not confusing enough, what used to be Engraving has been split into Engraving (what is says on the tin) and Rock Cutting (only Smoothing, and making blocks, which used to be done by the old Mason labor)

I didn't realize there was a change when I made my first embark and habitually packed along a Professional Mason, and pretty soon his Mason skill was rusty and his Stone Carver skill was going up after nonstop manufacture of thrones, tables, doors and what have you. Would be odd to have Carpentry be the skill for both furniture production AND building bridges etc, whereas Mason would only be related to building and not manufacture.

@AristophMarloque
@AristophMarloque Жыл бұрын
There's a much simpler way, imo, if you're just looking for a single opening. Instead of coming straight at the obsidian perpendicularly, mine up alongside the obsidian for a couple squares. Pick which of those square you're going to break through on, then mine out a little 3-5 square finger directly away from it on your same level, and then dig those floors into channels. It should look something like this: [] [] [] [] [] [] X M [] [] u u u u XM [] [] [] [] [] O X M [] [] [] [] [] T X M [] [] [] [] [] T X M The 'T's are the tunnel you're planning to fill with magma. The 'X' is the obsidian wall, with the Magma on the other side. The 'u's are the channel you dug (remember, the slopes left by channeling should be one level below your tunnel and the obsidian wall you plan to break through). All that's left is to simply assign the obsidian wall square for mining. If you've done it right, the 'O' in the diagram should be where your dwarf stands to do the mining. The magma will shoot out quickly, but it will go straight out and attempt to fill the channel before flooding to the sides, giving your dwarf plenty of time to simply run away back up the tunnel.

I started playing about 10 or 11 years ago, and for 4 of those years it was every day and the only game I played. I probably should have started this channel much earlier in time hahaha. I also play Kenshi alot and hold the world record for a kenshi speed run to bugmaster! Thank you for watching Rafael !

I was draining a volcano and didn't notice the lava jets... I had drained about 13 layers off... Also may have started an "eruption" by opening the volcanoes base, but it was on the ocean side so it made a lot of unusable obsidian after a long time.... Never could stop the volcano though it had gone on for years...

How do you avoid magma crabs (and other possible creatures that can survive in magma) from going through to your fortress?
@TwistedLogicGaming
@TwistedLogicGaming 3 ай бұрын
in the versions before steam (v47.5 and before) the workshops had impassable tiles that would block the openings to the magma. for the most part I use a grate over the the hole with a pump-stack on top of this to draw magma through the pump to the workshop area, its a bit more advanced to build. Since I have been playing for more than 10 years now I rarely go for volcanoe sites because of the ease of getting magma, but the same producible applies even if you move the magma 1z. a bridge could also be used in the magma to seal off the source from the fortress the shops only need a 4/7 depth of magma to function correctly. that being said it is a small amount of magma that can easily be transported via mine-cart.
@EnigmaticSoulExplorer
@EnigmaticSoulExplorer 3 ай бұрын
@@TwistedLogicGaming thank you! I guess the raised bridge is the easiest way. Thank you for your videos. They have become a great source of inspiration for me. I also have been playing for 10 years but never touched anything related to minecarts or mechanisms because I thought this is too complex to build. Now I'm playing with a goal of building the magma mist generator :D A possible idea for your video, if you're still making them: A demonstration of wagon-only entrances using ramps. I read about them in the wikis but never really tried, but the idea looks pretty cool, you can create a separate safe way to enter the fortress for wagons, while all other units go to the fortress through a trap-filled corridor.

Weird I just did the diagonal cut into the volcano this morning and it worked a treat. Didn't make a pit / pond but did have some nice obsidian doors for everyone to hide behind. I wonder if your guy did that thing where they pause for a moment after completing a job. I saw on the wiki or a forum that it's good to make them an engraver / smoother and give them a job far away right as they initiate the dig order but before they complete it. That way they immediately head off to their other job. A bit micro intensive but worth while if you don't have expendable dwarfs.

3:35 That's kind of wrong, only weak dorfs not worth Armoks respect will die in such a case. If it's an actually worthy dorf, the dorf won't get killed when the lava flows around and over him but instead the lava will become dorfy As 99.9999999999999999999999% of dorfs are not worthy though, it's a Stupid Dwarve Trick one should aspire, after living 5 years in a fortress, the dorf has to face Armoks Trial Of Fire

Here is a fun trick. Make a draw bridge with a lever and tell the dwarf to pull the lever. Under the drag bridge is a hole which allows your medical dwarves to practice fixing broken bones. The same trick can be used with magma down the hole if you want that dwarf to go away.
