Back when I was a kid, this episode and this theme absolutely blew me away. The first time I ever saw a Magmar prior to this was in Blue, when I finally caught one after hours of searching. It didn’t leave an impression on me until it appeared as Blaine’s ace in the anime. I know it’s not a Legendary, but the way it curb-stomped Pikachu, while this music was playing, honestly made me believe that Ash wasn’t facing a mere Pokémon. He was staring down a living force of nature, the closest thing to a fire elemental. And it found him wanting. EDIT-1: So imagine my shock years later, when I discovered that, like Freeza, this wasn’t the beast’s final form. EDIT-2: The only other time Pokémon music has given me such chills was the Primal Regression battle in OR/AS. That remix, paired with the visuals of the transformation, always makes me feel like I’m facing a full-blown kaiju, not just a Legendary Pokémon.

this music hits hard and i'd say its the most standout piece of background music in the entire series. its a volcano; its magmar; its a battle with some real danger! even when its reused later in the series, even though its not as epic as a volcano battle, you still know when you hear it that stuff's going down. thanks for posting!

Yeah it can go either way. They say it’s Magmar’s theme, b/c this was the first time used with Magmar and at that time nobody knew what a Magmar was, so they used this “EPIC” theme.
