It becomes even more terrifying of a song when you realize that the threat of Pikachu's potential death was genuine. Blaine and Magmar were both willing to send Pikachu into the magma, which they both knew would kill the little guy. No wonder nobody came to the island for the gym anymore; Blaine is a psychopath who is willing to murder his opponent's team.

The way Magmar doesn’t come out of a Pokeball, but instead rises from out of a pillar of molten magma, all while this music plays... As a kid, I had a poster that listed all of the first 150 Pokemon, so I knew what a Magmar was, but this scene made me immediately understand that this thing was *badass* and meant serious buisness. Then, it proceeded to not only completely dominate Pikachu, but it actually threatened to send him falling into a pool of lava! Like, what?! I was freaking out! What a great episode.

Honestly, this theme shouldn’t just belong to Magmar alone. This is a true Final Opponent score, meant for the most challenging battles. For example, does anyone else remember the Orange Islands champion battle? Specifically, that crazy-strong Dragonite? It’s been over a decade since I watched the series, but I can still remember what a beast and tank that thing was. It took multiple Pokémon to bring it down, and it was definitely a hard-earned victory.
