Big (or ar least larger) companies like Leatherman, Reeve and Spyderco using it across multiple lines on a pretty industrial scale should reveal (or should have already revealed?) any broader or wide scale issues with the product in general. My feeling is that companies of those sizes surely wouldnt stick with something just out of weird brand loyalty if it was costing them money and time due to systemic issues at the source. I remember years ago there was a lot of this kind of talk about Elmax, until everyone at all stages of production got a better handle of it.

Agreed Pete, I honestly feel like they have the grand power and larger sample size to accept or reject if standards aren’t met, I feel like survive was a victim of initial stages of refining the exact heat treat process and Racine does hardness, but survive was already under the gun to meet pre order production numbers then an unacceptable batch was simply pushed through to meet expected production and keep a smaller business moving so I feel the blame lays on both sides, they make amazing knives and the whole thing is just unfortunate.

I hear ya Pete. That’s why I said- this is bound to happen with any material. You basically have to be financially prepared to cover unforeseen booboos like this when running a company. Hello Erica. Thanks for the video. If I understood correctly, you replaced the convex grind of the Bark River MagnaCut with a micro-bevel because you had already had a problem with a convex grind in MagnaCut on another knife from another manufacturer. But wouldn't it have been better to just first test what Bark River convex is worth in MagnaCut ? For example, you kept the convex grind of the Chris Reeve in MagnaCut. SO ? Why do it any differently with Bark River ? Have a nice week ahead and see you soon.

Clearly Magnacut has quality control issues. Voids, cracks, porosity and inclusions can all be detected with radiography and ultrasonic testing. No steel stock should be leaving the factory with any of the previously mentioned flaws unless it is sold to the buyer as such. (ie factory rejects/seconds)

@@ShoahBiz I've explained why I believe there is a problem with the production magnacut unless it is being sold as a flawed product. Feel free to explain why _you think_ that it *is* acceptable for a company to sell bar stock that contains flaws? Forget knife makers for the time being, an engineering company may have hundreds of man hours into machining a product which they are manufacturing to a deadline, and they will all be wasted if unexpectedly a flaw suddenly appears in the metal. No engineering company would find this acceptable unless they have been made aware of this ahead of time and are prepared to accept the risk.

I used to be a nondestructive test inspector/examiner in the Navy, I'm familiar with just about every kind of discontinuity there is in the forming of steels and what causes them. It sounds to me like CPM needs to get a handle on their quality assurance program in order to prevent defective materials from reaching the public. Of course, that will drive prices up, but when the end product is in question you lose face.

Does magnacut take as aggressive an edge as easily as a good tool steel (k390, M4, Cruwear, Rex45, etc) I have no experience with MC, but I’ve found that stainless steels just never get the aggressive type of edge tool steels do (although S90v is pretty good). I pretty much only collect tool steel blades for this reason, but because I love super close to the ocean they inevitably rust no matter how well oiled I keep them. Cosmetics were never a primary concern for me, but if there is a stainless that yeilds that kind mean edge I’d be very interested

Honestly- I have had my Magnacut knives take a RIDICULOUSLY toothy, keen, aggressive edge. Seems like going the custom route really makes that a thing. Production Magnacut at 60-62 HRC won’t be the same. I have some customs in it though, 62HRC and up- and they take a wild edge!
