Magnanni Monk Straps - Heel Pad (Top Lifts) Replacement

The top lifts, or "heel pads", as most folks know them as, are most often the quickest part of our shoes to wear down. As Heath mentioned in this video, the top lifts are a lot like our tires. They are usually rubber, or leather/rubber combination, and provide traction to the backs of our heels as we walk. As they begin to wear down, we get closer and closer to wearing into our heel blocks, which is the thick part that the top lifts are adhered to. You DO NOT want to wear into this part.
This customer brought in a pair of Magnanni's that were LONG overdue for a top lift replacement. They had worn into the heel blocks so badly that we had to do a complete rebuild. Your local cobbler should be able to do this; however, it will usually be more expensive than just changing out the top lifts. Therefore, always take a look at the bottoms of your shoes and make sure to take them to your shoe cobbler when things begin to wear down. It will SAVE you money in the long run!

Thank you for posting this....Truly! When I was a child in NYC I would absolutely LOVE when my mother had to go to the neighborhood cobbler and as I went everywhere with her, this was such a treat!! ..I could have stayed there for hours watching him work. It was both fascinating and relaxing and I had such respect for this little man, our shoemaker, who I would, as I grew older, bring my favorite shoes and boots to, on my own, when they needed resoling. He had a heart of gold, enjoyed the work and lit up as he would lose himself in his craft and while he showed you, with gracious pride, the completed repair. I literally grieved years after having moved away and when one day while visiting my mom, finding out he was no longer in business..He was an older man, so surely he had passed away and had no one to leave the business to. I would definitely have become his apprentice, given the opportunity...Shame on me, I should have thought to ask..How fascinating it would have been to be trained by him! Truly a shame that he is gone. There is NOTHING to compare to the old time businesses...These days there is little to no appreciation for those, of days gone, who were so skilled and took pride in their craft...

When I was younger, I bought 4 pairs of Magnanni shoes that I recently started using on a rotation, and have always wondered about their quality. This is the first video I come across that actually talks a little bit about their quality. About the most interesting shoe video I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot! A refreshing amount of interesting tips here. Usually tradesmen keep their expertise and techniques close to the vest, you guys actually show and explain what you do! Seriously good stuff. And Magnanni’s aren’t half bad, though I’d go for some of the other Spanish makers instead, i.e. Carmina, etc.

Great work! I think my Italian Fratelli Borgioli brogues have the same problem: Heel blocks are heavy and very noisy.: Candidates for leather stack heel blocks upgrade and leather-rubber top. Leather helps to buffer noise as you walk and definitely it is lighter than other wood base materials.

Found this channel today KZbin searching on Magnanni shoes as I was considering purchasing a double monk brown-burgundy color somewhat. Nice Channel. It will fit with my other style channels as none are leather shoes specific and shoes in fact. But own over a dozen leather shoes averaging 6+ years. Hi guys! You'll probably roll your eyes but the brand is spelled " Man*yanni". In Italian "gn" always is pronounced "ny" just like in Spanish the letter "ñ". I know it is just a minor detail but I thought since you had mentioned your years in Italy, I'd come up with some information concerning the right pronounciation. Keep the excellent work!

Hey guys I'm a new fan and love your videos. Can I make a suggestion? It's something you're not gonna like, but it's important. I see you guys working with all those sanding machines and all those solvents and so forth, and I never see you guys wearing masks, often not wearing gloves. I know, you're cobblers and probably your dad was and probably NOBODY in the industry does this. But just consider it. Consider at least wearing masks when you are buffing and sanding things because inhaling these various dusts is really bad for your lungs. If you don't already have one, have a ventilation set up somewhere so that when you work with all the solvents and so forth, at least there is ventilation taking that stuff away and not letting it get into your lungs. You'll thank me when you're 65 and not wheezing. Just a suggestion. Keep up the awesome work. )))

I have a pair of double monk Magnani shoes. They are about 7 yrs old and they are my to go shoes. There are hardly any creases on then.I bought a pair of Prada thinking that they were the best but, They crease on the FIRST day !

The front bottoms also look run down but only the heel was replaced. Are the front of these shoes just more durable and the sole won’t need to be replaced till a later time?

Stephen Athon A little bit doesn’t hurt but if you condition the outsole leather too much it will soften it and cause to wear faster.

So? When you're re-soling a pair of shoes, it appears to be standard procedure to stain/wax the soles and heel leather. Being these portions of the shoes are in constant contact with the ground, and all the assorted contaminants associated with it (as well as puddles)... would it NOT be wise to condition/cream/hard wax them during regular shoe care? Or, would that accelerate the breakdown of the density of the sole leather?

What are your thoughts on if you've worn through the top lift and into just a little of the heel block, to take this opportunity to replace the entire heel with stacked leather and JR heel. Versus just adding a JR top lift to the existing heel block. BC even with Allen Edmonds, few makers use stacked leather so is it worth going ahead and getting it now.

shahtel Thanks for the great question! It’s really personal preference. I definitely agree that not many shoe makers are using stacked leather heel blocks any longer. Occasionally we’ll come across some, but it’s usually on the much higher priced shoes. We usually charge customers a little extra to build the heel block back flat, so if I were you, I’d rather go ahead and put that same money into purchasing stacked leather heel blocks when I change out my top lifts.

kaikaichen Hi! It’s a compound glue that’s made for the shoe industry (ie. leather, rubbers). I sometimes tell customers who come in for a very simple glue job that many compound glues found at a hardware store can often fix something very small; however, I don’t really recommend trying it on any large shoe repairs.

No one should be surprised by any company taking short cuts and attempting to maximize profit. That's what companies do. Some are worse than others and some are much worse than others. Stay away from the ones that are much worse. SHOULD Magnanni use stacked leather heel blocks? Yeah, probably. If you like the shoe and it's otherwise well made, fix the less well made parts during refurbs. That's still a really nice looking shoe, even though it's not really 100% my style.
