Take a look at a completely pulled apart Magnepan 3.7i. See how it works. See how I rebuild and personalize it and make it a Mikenepan !

Taking things apart and rebuilding them is a sign of an engineer. When I was a kid I rebuild my electric guitar, with spare parts from about eight other guitars, mine sounded like a Les Paul but played like a Stratocaster I had humbucker pickups on a Washburn body with 7 other pickups crowded on that body, with a Maple fretboard up to the fifth fret where a Rosewood fretboard took over. Other guitarist used to laugh at it until they played it.

OCD HI-Fi Guy question. What subharmonic woofer if any would you recommend with magnepan speakers? And which size magnepans do you recommend? I’m glad I stumbled across your channel. I went to a speaker show in Munich Germany recently and listened to some million dollar speakers. One speaker coast $2million, it’s Italian and it’s called “Opera Only”. When me a my gf were setting in the room with Magnepans I didn’t even know they were Speakers LOL. When the music came on is was The average white band’s “ pick up the pieces” which rocks! My girl look at me and took the words right out of my mouth, “I like these better than the $2 million dollar ones!

You are a genius for the new frame. Resonances will be absorbed that is so vastly superior to the original that I am sure you are a very happy listener! Waveguide? Awesome. .Triamp - doing it correctly, it will be in phase and sound and the bass, mid woofer and ribbon will blow you away. The cost of the amplifiers are not as high as you would think as amplifiers of the bass and mid bass need only 100w/ch 8 ohm on each. The ribbon can be powered by class a. You don't have to buy the most expensive amplifiers as prices come down from the monster 500+ w/ch to just 100 and 25 for the ribbon. Just so they are stable. Good cables works well too. I can only imagine what your system sounds like

So this is what the inside looks like... I have 3.6r's that one panel has started to make a buzzing sound with upper bass material which indicates a wire or wires has come unglued and I'm gonna have to go in there and repair it.... From what I've read the 3.7i and 3.6r are very similar in design... This video gives me the confidence I need to take on that task! Thx man!
@OCDHIFiGuy5 жыл бұрын
See ? There ya go. There is a certain glue to use I cant remember now, then glue the wire down and support it underneath then set some books on it and that's it.

I just restored an mg2 and a tympani I (3 panels per side) my main speaker., It’s not hard at all .. just call magnepan , they will send you all you need including new socks if needed, glue ,wire and rudimentary instruction. Take your time and makes pics of you remove anything or not feeling to comfy with. Restoring them is super easy

Great idea. I’m a little worried about the baffle depth that will be in front of the ribbon tweeter... it will alter its in-air response and off axis response. I purchased a pair of LRSs a few days ago. They should be here in about a week. I’m excited to fire them up!
@OCDHIFiGuy5 жыл бұрын
what off axis response ? lol.. for real these things beam and have zero off axis response. I am doing a wide flare waveguide anyways just to see if we can create a wider sweet spot.. it was my concern as well.

You are gonna love them. You might want subs I have two REL T5i which matches up great! I have to have the subs. Set them up as reflectors and near field as well if you can. I like them from afar they are so dialed it's scary.

@snowpuppy774 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. My Dad has a pair of 3.7i's un-modded. They are truly amazing speakers and a bargain at the price. Best tweeter I have heard in a speaker. Have you experimented with upgrading the fuses in the 3.7i? If so what kind of benefits? And what did you use?
@OCDHIFiGuy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Snow Pup, yes for sure, you use a fuse bypass which removes the fuse by replacing it with a pure silver tube. The kits are sold on Mikepowellaudio.com right now, but soon to be 11stereo. com I will be expanding the options within a week to include two different types of fuse jumper in the kit. One to liven it up and one to chill it out if its too lively to begin with . 90% of people want to liven it up, and the regular kit will be like pulling cotton ouyt of your ears with the 3.7i. This is all that is "needed" per se in my opinion. Next step is rigid stand.
@MinamiSen4 жыл бұрын
I want to ask did you use a strip of copper foil and replace the broken part in the tweeter? Thanks. My tweeter is broken at some point. Can you let us know how you fix your tweeter?

Nice project y'all got there! I think I need a pair of the little ones. How many watts min. does one realistically need to get the .7s singing?
@OCDHIFiGuy5 жыл бұрын
Depends how much current. Thats a better question as they are current hungry not watt hungry, but a Jeff Rowland 125 amp is only $3K. This is the amp I recommend for ,7i

Hi Mike, I don't know ESL / EL speakers like you do, I heard so much about Soundlabs, would you care to provide an opinion on Maggies and Soundlabs?
@OCDHIFiGuy4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. Just now saw this. They are 2 different technologies. Planar Magnetic, and electrostatic. Sonically the general consensus is ESL has better midrange and I cant remember the advantage to planar Magnetic in terms of sonic. Soundlabs are killer speakers, Maggie's need slight modification to be thier best, but for the money. Your return is ridiculous in terms of huge deep soundstage.

the way you modifying those magnepan's they gonna look like the vintage carver panel speakers, that's way cool, how they sound man?

The only people that you piss off are some of the 'High End Audio Industry' Dealers & small Manufacturers (Who are just throwing Parts together into a box & calling it a "Audio Component"). I'm trying to decide if want to tackle Upgrading my 2.7 QRs at some point. I'm tempted to try some of the things I've seen on the MUG board over on AA
