While Magnet Fishing the canal in Bootle, Liverpool i found some really interesting things, i was invited here by magnet mat who is a young magnet fisher and KZbinr.
This is the second time magnet fishing in bootle and we fished further round the canal from last time and target all the other bridges. It wasn't long before we where pulling out stolen cash boxes and even a large rusty machete.

We did our 1st magnet fishing last Saturday. I believe we were about 3 bridges down from this. We got 2 small blades, a cash register (empty) 6 scaf poles and a bucket of scrap. There was also a doorless safe but even with 2 x magnets we couldnt get it out. Good fun. Took about 3 hours and met plenty of friendly people. Will def do this again.

The ‘step’ is what’s called a sill on a lock. You see a lot of narrowboats sunk because they don’t go forward of the sill when they let the water out so the back end gets caught on the sill while the front dips and they end up flooding the boat. That’s why the sill is usually marked

The fish you spotted will be Roach. Nice little school of them. Their presense and the little shrimp like creatures you saw actually suggest the water is a in reasonable health which is good.

Bridges are usually good places to magnet fish. Another good place is near canal locks because boat owners drop things overboard there, probably accidentally. Places on canals with mooring rings where boats moor up is another good spot. You can sometimes find lock key turning crank things near lock gates where people have dropped them.

The step at 14:30 is simply due to the different levels of the canal. Canal depth is governed by the size of boat using the waterway, in this case barges. The canal won't normally be much deeper than 5-6 feet. The lock is obviously used to allow barges to go from one height to another. The large piece of stone making the step stops the soft bottom of the canal washing away every time the lock gates are open, it also gives the gates a better sealing surface across the bottom of the lock gates.

Have a look a little further down away from the Liverpool end towards the Tesco, that was dredged about 2 years ago when they put in the swivel bridge so you may find some stuff there by now

The ladders in the lock are for climbing up or down qhwn lowring your boat up or down by yourself. If you find a lock on the canal that is being used dredge those with your magnet. You should get some finds!

Born and bread in Bootle and spent 70% of my youth fishing the canal all along from Liverpool centre to Lydiate, I have never seen the drained lock.. Im not convinced that is in bootle?
