Nobody seems to discuss how Mathews did not ask the umpire or Shakib for time after his strap broke. Anybody watching the game live and paying attention would notice, he simply stepped off guard and started gesturing to the dugout. Only after everyone approached him to ask what happened, he said his strap broke. That's when Shakib (probably prompted by Shanto) made the appeal of Timed Out. This could all be avoided if Mathews did one of two things (as a very senior cricketer very well knowing this being a rule, in domestic cricket players are taught about taking guard 'within time' many times) - as he was facing spin, 1. give his helmet to umpire and take guard without a helmet (MANY MANY MANY times batsmen do this); in this case the umpire himself might have stopped play altogether until he got his gear, nullifying any chance for an appeal as play is stopped, 2. take guard with the broken strap helmet, just block the first delivery and then ask dugout for a helmet, this he could do only by informing umpire and without caring for the opposition captain. Not like his helmet without a strap would drop off from his big ass head anyway while playing spin. He showed arrogance and zero 'sportsmanship' and got similar treatment in return :)
