Magnetic control conversion for CT multiplier reels

The majority of small CT casting multiplier reels cast much farther and more easily if the original braking system is modified. With this new sideplate conversion for Abu 4500, 5500 and 6500 series reels, you get tournament-grade performance without having to do the usual modifications.

I use a couple of dabs of marker pen, but you're right that a proper dial would be better. All these tuning accessories, including ceramic bearings, can lift a reel's performance. Every extra metre is valuable in tournaments. The big question is whether they make any significant differerence when you're fishing. Personally, I've always been happy with standard bearings.

love this video. thank you I have an old diawa came to me for free, siezed and full of salt with all most all magnets gone now I know almost nothing about fishing and was wondering if I'll break anything if I cast it like that I learned on a penn 500 gigmaster so the wilder spool shouldn't be too hard to get used to

This was a pre-production sample without the anodising, and obviously it's prone to corrosion. I rinse the saltwater off and smear it with grease now and again. I've fishing with it for the best part of two years now, and it's slightly pitted but otherwise perfectly OK. The latest versions aimed at fishing are anodised; and as you say, there are plenty more choices.

John Holden bought one used 4 time was not happy NM put it away tried it again plate was corroded sent it back to the company who did not have the common courtesy to reply when I call them from Australia they was far from helpful and blamed myself just avoid this company who could learn about customer care Dave

I see tournament magnets available and what is called Fishing, improved braking. What is the difference, I'm assuming the size, strength of the magnets? Fishing larger, doesn't have as heavy cutoff?

Roughly speaking, the tournament magnets - which are usually monomags - offer a wider range of braking. However they can be difficult to adjust, one reason being that the magnetic effect is not linear throughout its range. So a very small adjustment may have a big effect. This is fine for field work but not so good for fishing. The factory magnet controllers fitted to standard reels work over a smaller braking range. There is often a fair amount of braking even at zero setting, which may not suit the tournament caster but is an advantage for beach fishing. Most of these units can easily be modified to reduce the brake force if necessary.

Very knowledgeable video, thank you for sharing. I do have a question regarding the fixed end cap, does it get in the way when casting (tournament) while adjusting the magg? Also, does the company make one where the fixed end cap is more low profiled or is it engineered that way for a purpose? thanks in advance, lines!!

Am very surprised that you would say a bare bones side plate is good for fishing when it will corrode rather quickly without any protection of the aluminum. The Bare Bones side plate has been made for the purpose of field casting and as the RRC website states is NOT FOR FISHING There are plenty of custom side plate manufactures that do make side plates that ARE for fishing. BlakDogTackle, Zzeta, Manfish and myself (PMR) do make Maged side plates, both Center mag and Mono Mag for Abu & Akios.

Thank you sir for a pretty well done video... However, some things seem to contradict your position... 1. you mentioned at some point the monomag will suddenly lose all braking power as you turn it down... to me that isn't "infinitely more control". that would be if I could make a wide range of tiny adjustments in strength, with a stop at the zero point. 2. your statements concerning the centrifugal brake system seem to indicate you don't truly understand how it functions: you recommend removing the 6 blocks, each of which is a brake of very tiny power When APPLIED, but which have no breaking effect when not set. that is, each plastic brake can be set in one of 2 positions. hen pushed all the way to the center, they will "click" into the off position, ie. centripetal force will not throw it outward to rub against the braking drum, in which case no braking force is applied
