Nice work! Extra letters are a must. "antidisestablishmentarianism" ; just poking fun. Its wonderful you are invloved in educating your grandson. So many just park children in front of a TV or computer. I commend you.

Here's an idea. Get a sheet of flexible magnets (fun colors a plus), cut out letters, stick 'em to the fridge.

That works too!!! I think I would have to do that with scissors or an exacto knife. I tried cutting a piece of rubber magnet with my laser and it made a lot of smoke and a terrible smell and burned the magnets. Heat normally kills the magnetism. I have some new lenses coming in and hopefully they will focus to a more narrow beam and do more cutting than burning.

In addition to the normal letter distribution for words, include extra letters for their name. They will be learning to spell that too. I have a friend whose last name is Vazquez. His children will need a letter set with extra v, q, and lots of z's.

Yes, I had to make sure I made enough letters so my granson could spell his name as well as his little brother's name and Mommy and Daddy. :) The first batch of letters I gave him did not include a L which is what his name starts with. He kept telling me his name has an L in it. I had told him that the first L I cut out broke and I needed to cut some more - which I did and he was happy then.:) Thanks for watching it.

Anyone ever have success grinding/cutting ceramic magnets? I think big old-style ceramic magnets are safer with kids around since kids put *EVERYTHING* in their mouths. If you can cut them nicely or buy a large enough variety of lengths, one could use the larger ceramic magnets as the entire base under each letter. If you use magnets with poles along the length of the base you could chose the NS directions so that you cannot put letters backwards while connecting them together. You also wouldn't need a special surface to build words but could still use one if you want them to stick to that surface or be easy to move around. ...now if we could get the letters to glow when they are placed on a special-made surface...that would be cool...there is a way. :-)
