We purchased an inexpensive Mag drill and built a mount and stand to turn it into a stationary drill press, we added 5/8 holes to support Stronghand build pro insert clamps. We did some drilling, countersinking, counterboring, milling, and tig welding

You really have the fab bug, nice work. A simple tool you might like for the mill is an edge finder. saves you from doing layout all the time.

cigarcaptain I have a Mitutoyo edge finder, but haven't taken the time to use it. My mill doesn't have a DRO on the X and Y axis, so not sure how it can prevent a lot of the layout work?

Nice workmanship, I built one in about 2009 using a Hoegen Mag Drill, I had a large drill press but the core drill bits cut much faster. At one time in the 1980s I used several hoegen mag drills as my Column and beam line for a start up fabrication shop. Best Regards, A Retired Union Ironworker.

Thanks Terry! Yea, it's kind of a medium sized one. Any bigger than that, and it becomes difficult to position, etc. I saw your PM to me. I had never heard that trick on tightening a chuck in more than one position, thanks for sharing that. This thing came with 2 chucks and both are junk, the jaws keep backing off. I am going to order a nicer chuck like a jacobs or albrieght for it.

Well you are too kind sir. I would like to say that I am a very talented design architect, but the reality is, I just copy/modify something else I have seen in pictures or on youtube. It is a bit ad lib, you can see all over that big table where I draw how dimensions and things right when I am building it. It's kind of fun... until something doesn't fit right, lol

Awesome Gary. I'm learning every time you put one of these up. Your vids make me want to go spend my life savings on machining tools... Do the big drills you are using require sharpening??? Looks like they have a ton of cutting surfaces. I'm guessing that would be a huge pain and might require a setup on the lathe to sharpen them well. Also, what did you use for the "buttons" on the angle iron stand. They sorta look like big rivets. If you are hosting "Metalwork Monday" maybe the guitar project should be "woodwork Wednesday"... Just doesn't have the same appeal though.

I hear you man, buying tools can be an addiction, I have a few more things to buy, and then it will be on to making some Cool Brookelane pieces and hopefully make some money to pay for all this stuff :). As far as the annular cutters needing sharpened. Yes, they eventually wear out, but when I was researching them I found a guy on youtube that drilled 275 holes in 3/8th plate with one cutter and it never dulled. Just like everything else, they range in price from $10 for a small on in HSS, and as much as $200 for a carbide one in 4-5" diamater. It would probably cost more than the cheap ones are worth to sharpen, so they just become consumable, but again have a long life. They dont' remove all of the material of the hole since they are like a hole saw on steriods, and they have 5 to 20 teeth on them compared to only 2 teeth with a twist drill. Woodwork Wednesday would be awesome! I would watch it every Wednesday!

Hello Gary, Is it possible to DIY sharpen HSS annular cutters? Be a good video. I am thinking of springing for a few but would hate to pay the price for a throw away cutter. Good video. Wish I had one of the mag drills but they are still too pricey for me. Take care. Doug

PS: Drills and Cutters advertises an annular cutter with a pilot drill. I hadn't realized that they ran a pilot drill? Is that the case and if so is it a special bit as it seemed on their webpage. Doug
@mattbentley8958
@mattbentley8958 4 жыл бұрын
No pilot drill. There is a center rod with a pointed end that you use for alignment. It is spring loaded and pushes up into the chuck as you drill. The annular cutter's you are referring are more like hole saws for metal and are probably designed to be used in a hand drill or drill press.

Thanks CJ. Oh yea, the magnet has 4000 lb of clamping force. So when you position it where you want it, and turn the mag on, it's not going anywhere. with 4000 of clamping, you could put it on top of your car, turn the mag on, and pick your car up with it, lol

So, you've convinced me to get this Mag Drill for my shop... mainly because of the reverse and 3" hole capability. I've been shopping them for awhile, and I can't find any that have that feature. I'm willing to spend up to a G & J Hall ($1800) and they don't even have reverse. (I like the fact that theirs is dual voltage) Anyway, would you be willing to sell me a similar 1-1/4" insert for the tap?
@turbocobra
@turbocobra 8 жыл бұрын
+Eco Mouse So far this mag drill setup has worked great. There is a little runout in the spindle so it doesn't make super precise holes, but none of them really do. I don't really make things like that to sell. It really needs to be done on a lathe and I don't have one of those yet. good luck!
@EcoMouseChannel
@EcoMouseChannel 8 жыл бұрын
+turbocobra I kinda figured this drill would have some runout, considering it's a connection to a connection to a shank. But what about the larger 1-1/4" spindle? Any noticeable runout there?

I just ordered one of these drills. How is yours holding up? Does it have an ejector spring for the slug?
@turbocobra
@turbocobra 6 жыл бұрын
I would say it's held up "OK". The ejection spring never worked right. It was too weak and would get jammed in the retracted position. I contacted them about this and never got resolution. The gibs on the vertical ways need to be tightened constantly. Overall it still works and I do use it quite bit. Its way cheaper than the brand name ones so you get what you pay for.
@oswelding
@oswelding 6 жыл бұрын
Ramsey Customs - turbocobra I received my drill yesterday & figured out the problem with ejecting the slug. Using the 3/4" adaptor there is a gap between the top of the pin & the spring. I am going to weld a small rod on top of the pin & see if that helps.
