One thing I didnt see mentioned was if the magnet isnt holding down, whether the drill will still operate. I have drilled into as thin as 2mm C section. Just clamped on a chunky piece of flat plate under section. You need a decent thickness of steel for the magnet to have decent holding power.

Gday John, I reviewed the same mag drill and was extremely impressed at how it preformed, only real negative I found was the drill chuck had far to much runout and unusable, the quality of the cutters are spot on, great value for money mate, cheers

@timso522 11 ай бұрын
Different drills have different arbor systems & therefore runout can vary from machine to machine. Some include a fixed hold that bolts into the base to limit that as much as possible.

Being a machinist, these are a must have tool. Plus, most machinists already have an R8 adapter with annular cutters so this purchase is a no-brainer! Makes for an excellent portable drill press too. I've have the older version for 2 years now and it still works just fine. I used mine recently to cut a 1.5" hole in some rectangular tubing (0.250" wall) to fix an old 12T hydraulic press 😊 I also own a BlueRock compact version too. Just so you know, these magnetic drills spend most of their life sitting on a shelf collecting dust but when you do need one it's a Godsend to have one in the shop. So if you have the cash to spare, it's definitely worth buying. Just some advice, don't make the mistake of buying the Vevor magnetic driil with the Nitto (Quick-Change) system because the annular cutters are way more expensive than the standard Weldon shank cutters 🤑

In 2010-2011 I was on a crew refurbishing a bridge on the Historic Register. Used one of those to remove the heads of 5000 rivets and then drive out the rivets and replace with high strength bolts. Heavy awkward and powerful.

Hi John. Great video, thank you. I've had one of these Vevor's (same model as you show) for a while and like you found it very easy to use, out-of-the-box. I first looked at hiring a Mag Drill from one of the large Hire places around and for two days hire, I covered the cost of the Vevor. I would recommend one of these to anyone who needs to do serious drilling, having also used a large power hand drill on the job and found it took 10-15 minutes of pretty hard drilling to put a 10mm hole into a 5mm thick steel beam. The Vevor did it in about 1-2 minutes.

I first came across mag drills in the mid 1970's my soon to be brother in law had an engineering workshop in Cambridge UK he had a mag drill that was an absolute beast the drill was a gut buster that was mounted on the magnetic base which had a tail with an adjustable stop so that more pressure could be used on the drill without the magnet lifting. I got to spend three weeks in the early 1980's using it to drill holes in Victorian wrought iron beams in the Cambridge corn exchange, it took two people to lift the thing overhead and we were getting through two cutters a hole on average as the glass hard outside of the beams blunted the cutters which got sent off for sharpening due to the cost of the cutters, now they are just about an expendable consumable. But for in a DIY shop I have worked in places where they have fifty men and one mag drill. Pro tip, it is worth hanging onto the slugs just in case you want to plug a tube or hole, the bigger ones especialy.

Excellent info as always...so good, in fact, I decided that a mag drill press is not what I'm looking for. I had hoped to mate this up with the Vevor welding cart I received a few days ago, but a standalone drill press now seems to be the best option.

I recently purchased a mag drill from Vevor, and I love it. I bought the more expensive one, a bit over $500. It comes with variable spead and a quick release system which I believe is superior to the the two allen key systems in this video as the cutters can be changed in a few seconds with no tools the quick release system has less runout. it is not a lot but hey the less run out the better. The other thing is don't leave the magnet on for extended periods as it will eventually burn out. These Vevor mag drills are outstanding value for money.

I was unaware of magnetic drill. Very cool, if you happen to have a large magnetic surface to drill into. Sucks when it's a big silver or gold plate ;-) Seems a narrow use case, a mag drill, at least for the projects I envision. But it might open a new kind of projects.

I ran a fleet of trucks, but began as a tech years ago. I had never even heard of a mag drill. After seeing yours in-action, I can see it's value in a lot of projects even if not many my own. Your presentation really struck me at the end when you revealed the price. I checked the price in USD as that's where I live ($245USD/$364AUD). I then checked to see if I could get ot for that price here and was dumbfounded that it was actually cheaper and incl. free shipping at $199USD/$312AUD. I know tools. I have bought many. This is cheap - dirt cheap IMO. I'm kind of suspicious of it as a matter of fact. But my suspicion. Also might be because I'm a jaded prick.

Hey John, I got one of these in a "shut up and take my money" type of arrangement. How do they do it for the money??? One point to note though: I was expecting a bunch of annular cutters to be included but there were only 2-off 30mm ones in the box. I checked the vevor website and indeed it says only two. I could have sworn it advertised a set of cutters and the box lid wasn't taped down very well... I got what is advertised but I could swear black and blue it was advertised differently at time of order. Doesn't matter too much though, this thing is a beast! Wanted one for a while, didn't realise you could get one for less than 2,000 dollarydoos.

Recently, I got a really cheap used one (not VEVOR). Problem is, it keeps falling (motor down the dovetail). I thought it would have a spring like big drill press, but couldn't find a spring even in diagram of the machine. After a lot of research with no results I saw a video from the assembly line and the assembly guy was using a torque wrench to push it down instead of the tree levers, and he vas doing it vith machine in horizontal position. So I figured he was setting up the needed torque/force that should be used on the leavers to bring it down or up. So now I need some idea on how to set up my old BDS MAB485 so that it doesn't fall on it's own: how much torque, how to set the dovetail, etc. Thanks in advance if you decide to help, and even more if you make a video. All the best!

Hougen invented the annular cutter geometry, but lots of other folks do them too. However, the cutting geometry is all about the ID, not the OD., so if you can use the coolant bottle to flood the ID your cutters will last dramatically longer. Also, if you use enough cutters there are units where you can regring both the ID & OD both. I have a lot of customers that resharp their own for a huge cost savings.

Safety first hey....no fingers around the base when turning on the mag and don't put your hand between the side of the drill and a solid object. Drill slips and throws the whole drill sideways = amputation! Personally Angular cutters are quick, but are expensive to sharpen. Personally just use a twist drill on mine with a No 2 morse taper. Easy to sharpen. Build a base that clamps onto your work, could be box or flat that raises the drill off the surface. I use mine as a drill press out on the job site.
