i just said "i love you" out loud. i just built out my ruck bed for a fun camping redwood road trip with my kid and wanted to surprise her with by painting the inside of the truck canopy with chalkboard paint . buuut i really want magnetic too because it's the cheap aluminum top and magnets don't hold but the idea at the end is brilliant and perfect for us down to the pics and i don't care so i am letting her stick stickers of our stops on anyway. brilliant thank you !!!

Great update. I used the chalkboard paint last year and recoated a 2' x 3' chalkboard I have in my shop. It worked great, and still works great. I didn't know...or rather the store didn't have the magnetic paint in stock at the time or I would have use it prior to the chalkboard paint. Its nice to have a way to keep plans on the wall while working in the shop. The only issue I have is the ridiculous price for a 1 pint can, other than that it does work great. I've been tempted to put a board together and try the dry erase paint and see how well it works...and do the magnetic paint on it as well.

You get a huge thumbs up from me! I have a door that I will be doing just what you did on the wall and you answered two of my questions with this video. I have a corkboard on there now but I would rather paint the door so that the whole thing is used for the next person as I will be putting the house up for sale in about two years. I’m starting to look around the house and seeing what would make things easier for the next person and entice them to buy and this will work really well in the kitchen. That way they can use the whole door to doodle or put notes on and even hang papers if they absolutely need to lol… So where did you get the small magnets? Those seem to work really well as do the pictures so I will have a display when the final walk-through happens so that the next people can see what they are able to do. Thanks again for putting this video out there!

I did something similar 8 years ago (summer 2010) using the magnetic paint and then the whiteboard paint -- the only 2 things I would have done differently is a) shake, not stir, the first can of magnetic paint so it coated more evenly and b) took more time and sanded more carefully between coats as the whiteboard surface is pockmarked is spots and not as smooth as I would have liked -- we use it all the time as both as a whiteboard and for hanging items with magnets - yes we have to adjust which magnets we use and just how many, but it has been so helpful over the last 8 years

Thank you +Superholly. You just saved me some money and a lot of frustration. I have a few hundred magnets I have collected from all over the world that I wanted to put up on a wall in my office. I was hoping this would work as it seemed like an easier solution than my original idea. I am going to tack up a 48"x120" piece of 1/32" steel sheetmetal and then make a frame around it.

Not impressed until you got to the magnetic pictures you had made, then cool. But, how much did the pics cost and where did you have them made? I'm in the process of building my own RV and have wondered what I could do with my pictures I have when I move into it, this would be a great way, paint the cupboards and hang the pics, rotate as needed.

Did you know this paint contains lead? I purchased a can of this paint but didn’t use it immediately. When I was ready to make a magnetic chalk board for my daughter’s bedroom I read the full instructions and realized I needed a second can. I went to Lowes to purchase an additional can and was told it was no longer sold because of the lead content. I checked the manufacture website which did not list lead anywhere. However, when I downloaded the technical data sheet it contained a warning to wear a respirator if you sand this paint to prevent lead exposure. I decided to return the can I purchased. I’m not comfortable putting lead paint in my home. You should add a warning to your video for other parents interested in using this paint since the manufacture buries the lead danger in a technical data sheet that most people never see.

I have painted my kitchen door(leaving a border) with one coat of the Rust-Oleum magnetic primer that says it is 3x stronger but I cannot ateast to that, as like the gal demonstrated in the video my magnets have done the same😬. I have been successful in using a flat magnet with one sheet of paper 8-1/2by11 size-:). I am wondering when I applying the chalkboard paint if it will have the same holding effect?? I plan to put another coat or so and re-test before putting the chalkboard paint over top. It will be disappointing if it does not hold magnets with papers etc. I would live to hear how it goes with your project if you would not mind sharing. Thank you in advance. Does anyone know can we add something to the primer to help the holding effect?? Thanks in advance😃

From what I've seen, I'm not sure if it would be strong enough. A quick google shows that metal back splash tiles exist, so personally, I would recommend taking a jar in with a magnet and testing some of the tiles in store. I think you would get much better usage out of that, rather than the numerous paint coats needed to get any decent iron shaving concentrations on the wall. There are numerous online sources for changing tiling and back splashes on youtube if the labor has you leaning away from tiling a wall. (HGTV has a blog post called "Magnetic Backsplash Ideas that I looked at to reply to you) Would love to know what you go with!

MAGNETS are not all created equal. And if you are making a chalk board, you could just use a piece of sheetmetal. You can frame the chalk board with anything from the craft store using hot glue or something like E6000 glue. There is magnetic was paint that you actually can use to hang a collage of portraits and paintings. Arrange and rearrange at your hearts desire.

I've watched other magnetic chalkboard paint videos and they use 6 coats of magnetic paint before paint with chalkboard. Then all but the long tape like ones worked fantastic. Her tip was to cut the tape strip magnets in to smaller pieces and then they worked. You can also display school papers on those with multiple coats of the magnetic before chalkboard.
