Learn flash photography with MagMod Genius Trevor Dayley! Trevor shows us how to use MagMod's awesome magnetic flash modifiers and fan-favorite rigid polycarbonate gels for color balancing or creativity. In this video, you'll learn the difference between CTO and CTB gels. Using the MagGel and hassle-free rigid gels that pop right into the magnetic holder, you can color balance your flash to the appropriate Kelvin temperature to create flattering skin tones or change the color of the sky. You'll also develop an understanding of how to use MagMod's Creative or Artistic Gel Sets to turn boring backgrounds into moody, visually exciting spaces.

Mixing colors is fun but, I cheat some with color wheels. I got set of two from Amazon. Color Mixing Guides, Color Wheel and Creative Color Wheel. Both are 9-1/4" in Dia. $17.95. I still play with my colors too. Great video, I learn every time I watch his videos. He is very good and sharp as a tack. J. Payne Charlotte, NC.

I don’t understand! I threw my Kelvin to 10 thousand then added a blue CTB Gel my the subject is still blue. Do I move the flash farther from the subject? Do I need a 1/2 CTB ? I am currently using a full CTB

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm cranking the WB as low as possible (2500K) to get the blue sky and then using the CTO gel and the person is way too orange. Conversely, I set the WB as high as possible 10000K with a CTB gel and the person is way too blue. What am I forgetting?

how do you know which tone of orange or blue will cancel out exactly which kelvin temperature though? what i mean to say is that for example if you use a certain shade of blue gel to exactly cancel out 10,000K, that same shade of blue will no longer be sufficient to cancel out 20,000K correct? is there a look up table of corresponding Kelvin temperature vs say, and RGB numeric of the gel itself?

@dayleyhighlights
@dayleyhighlights 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lloyd there are some general ideas, but because photography/art is so different for everyone it is kind of subjective. What kind of situations do you have in mind? Happy to let you know what I would usually use.

How about if im gonna take a photo shoot in a forest where i am surrounded by trees, grass which is mostly dominated by color green.
@dayleyhighlights
@dayleyhighlights 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to cancel out a color or neutralize it you will want to use the complimentary color which in that sense would be magenta. So in your situation maybe using a Lavender or Pink from the Artistic Gel set would help a bit if you were using just a tiny bit of light. But usually when I find myself in a similar circumstance I will just use the White Balance Shift on my Canon Camera. From there I can add Magenta's to the colors in the camera in order to offset the green skin tones. Usually for color correction with gels I only use the CTB (Blue) or CTO (Orange) gels. The other ones I mainly use for special effects.
@elevationdynamics
@elevationdynamics 6 жыл бұрын
Very cool. Just one doubt though. From what I've learnt about the kelvin scale and color temperature in general is that as you go higher up the kelvin scale the bluer the image gets. But in this video. Its quite literally the opposite. Shouldn't 3200K mean the image should have a warm yellowish reddish tone. As opposed or blue?
@dayleyhighlights
@dayleyhighlights 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sri - it would take me a couple paragraphs to explain it all but a few years back I did write an article on Fstoppers that should help. So if it's okay I am going to leave that link here. fstoppers.com/post-production/learn-shoot-proper-white-balance-using-kelvin-temps-3328

MagMod I wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your products. After buying two basic Magmod sets , I bought another Chinese knockoff magnetic gel set which didn't last too long. That filter bent quickly because the filter holder and filter were too thin and cheaply made. So I bought a third Magmod set. Your stuff is tough and built for pro use. I use it to quickly color correct my flashes but your tutorials inspire me to use your gels more creatively and to use the grids and your snoot which I bought and never used.

MagMod I got the Magmod 2 basic modifier kit a few weeks ago. Last year I purchased 2 basic modifier kits and a snoot. I use the basic kits all the time for color correction. I have one on each off camera flash that I use. ( My Nikon flashes that I use on camera come with gels that clip onto the flash). I never use the snoot, but I should really start using it. I'm just used to using parabolic umbrellas for portraits all the time.
