It's really hard not to feel for Magneto. It takes great evil to turn a man evil himself. Breaks your heart to think how much good a man like Erik could have done if it wasn't for the torment he experienced as a child

Not just his childhood trauma. He said to the UN leaders, "Do not Make Me Let You Down". He was ready to never go down the path of villainy again but more trauma caused by humans happened. The childhood trauma he went through was enough but then throw in Genosha & post-Genosha, he just could never be the same. If those things hadn't happened, he'd be doing such good for both humans & mutants.

Charles and Magnus have the same dream, just two very different ways of getting to that dream. They both want the best for mutants and to create a world where they don't need to be feared and hated. For Charles, that's coexistence with humans. The "high road" if you will. He believes that with enough time, humanity will come around. But humanity proves time and time again that they won't. Magneto wants mutants to be free at the cost of the humans. The fact that he was willing to give Charles's way and honestly, really tried to in this series made him such a compelling character. This hurts because Erik is still, and always has been, right. When Genosha happened, a bunch of humans hunted down Roberto and Jubilee with one of them chanting “You thought Genosha was bad?” They condone genocide. They relish genocide of innocent mutants, cast them out of society, desecrate religions and create atrocities just to rub it in their faces. And they still think they can hide behind “fear of mutants power”, when all mutants have done was been the victim of humankind’s condescending, codependent play for superiority? Magneto *was* right.

What this series proved… was that Magneto was right. Charles had a dream of peace, but it is just that, a dream. Reality is death, persecution, being hunted for simply existing. If this was a real scenario, as a human I would side with Magneto. The majority of humanity isn’t worth saving.
