Sultan Suleiman punishes Murat heavily and fear grips the Grand Master who learns about the assassination. Will Ottoman Empire make the whole Rhodes pay a heavy price for the assassination? The Grand Master gets shocked by the decision of Ottomans about Rhodes.
At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

She bore a son. But that still didn’t seem to be enough for the family. They tried to keep her separate from her son at first. They tried to edge her out of his life by not letting her hold him right when he was born and then giving him to a wet nurse. So she thought if she gave birth to another son they couldn’t deny her anymore. They’d be forced to accept her. So when she saw she’d given birth to a girl, she became afraid. Afraid that they would use it as an excuse to get rid of her, exclude her further, maybe even to end her life.

The pressure to have male heirs to carry on the legacy was throughout all levels of society; daughters weren't considered as "valuable." Except as political/social pawns for the family. King Henry VII of England was ruling at the same as Sueliman & married 6 times trying for a son. Kublai Khan in Mongolia was the same; an heir with his blood to rule -- a boy.

All this episode in regards to Hürrem's reaction to Mihrimah's birth is...nonsense. To begin with, that second pregnancy was, in and of itself, a great victory for Hürrem. Why? Because she had already given birth to a boy. According to tradition, which dictated "one son for every mother", Hürrem, after Mehmet's birth, would have become an unelligible sexual partner for the Sultan: she had already fulfilled her duty to give birth to a male potential heir for the dynasty. A second pregnancy was, thus, an extraordinary event. Then, a girl was a gift for the dynasty and were generally very well welcomed: the girl was not subjected to the dramatic fate reserved to her brothers, she wasn't embroiled in disputes for the throne and her existence wasn't threatened by anyone. Yes, she would be a political pawn for her mother, who would seek to marry her to strengthen her brother's (or brothers', in this case) position, but besides that, sultanas were cherished members of their dynasty. So it is utter nonsense all this and later in the series, that interior monologue of Mihrimah on the day of her marriage.

I love the fact that the conquered lands were allowed to practice whatever religion they wanted to. The conquerors didn't force them to accept Islam. They could have done so, but that would have led to rebellion. I think this was a very smart, strategic move.
