This fortress was the most powerfull on the balkans and used to be the center of power for almost all of the peninsula,(while our older capital pliska was the biggest fortified city in all europe arround the 9th century-23 sq.km.)in its peak,the second bulgarian empore and the first as well was arround 700 000 sq.km. and during the time that the latins contolled constantinopol,our emperor ivan asen (one of the four tzars on the big monument)the second said that even they live thanks to his good will because they dont have other ruler but him,also may be you heard about this the latin knights never defeated before,met their match in the face of our emperror kaloyan asen the third brother of the dynasty,and one of the 4 on the monument,even their emperor balduin from belgium (flanders)was captured and later killed for ploting.....the royal insignia of asen dynasty was the snow leopard

I'd recommend visiting the Monastery Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) and also Arbanasi & Kilifarevo ... Preobrazhenski monastery is amazingly beatiful...

Actually first bulgarian empire never stop existing it was ruled by bulgarian nobels all the time of the byzantene rule(1018-1187) only the emperor family was deported not to rebel,by the byzantene emperor basil the bulgarslayer......also the turks took the fortress with trick,not with force and the defender was the last bulgarian patriarch from the second empire evtimii and the turks needed half a century to conquer all bulgaria,later they said that bulgaria had the most fortreses and the strongest and it took them the hardest time to conquer our state in comparison with all other they had later
