In starting episodes of this series (even before safiye sultan decided to kill ahmed), she said that she is upset that her grandson neglects her ‘we want our grandson to take our blessings, kiss our hand and listen to us if he wants to stay sultan'. Kosem want even more than this, she want him to stay back and let her rule because she WANTS TO PROTECT HIM. Safiye wanted ahmed to respect her and give her more status and power than his mother and always seek her advice and stay by her side. Basically a co-regent.
