Different brands are different power as well. Winchester lr primers are basically like a magnum cci or federal. Winchester lrm is the most powerful. I’ve watched a lot of guys test it

Ever since I seen the first time that you said about using a regular large rifle primerin Magnum calibers I started using the federal gold medal match large rifle primers in my 338 Lapua and you are 100% correct it's not such a sharp shove as it is a gentler start with the same end result

I have been looking for large rifle magnum primers for a year, I rang 8 shops just this week. Tonight, I decided to look into the possibility of using standard primers for my 375 H&H and yet again, you have the answers. Thanks mate. I was seeing similar comments on forums, but hearing it here and reading the comments gives me the confidence to work with what I've got. A bit more research first. I now see in Nick Harvey's Practical Reloading Manual that he discusses the same points. I suppose the other half a dozen reloading manuals I have also make similar points.

If it is any help I've been running the laupa small primer brass in 6.5 Creedmoor for some time now and have not had any ignition issues in temperatures down to -40C when testing specially that. It seems to be a lot easier to find the small primer brass and then small primers for it than it does sourcing the large rifle or LRM's. Cheers from Canada!

I live in Alaska and I shoot the .243 and I can say I use CCI 250 LRM primers and they go bang every time. In the summers I used to switch but the supply chain screwed that up for me. But I haven’t had any bad effects from it

Some time ago you mentioned using large rifle primers and I loaded some in rounds for both my 7mmRemMag and 300RUM. It was during the warmer months of summer and I could not only feel the difference between them and the magnum primers but, my groups were better. However, when I was getting ready for hunting season and went to the range, they didn't perform as good as the magnum primers did on groups. It was 23F that day and you just explained why they didn't work as good. Cold weather is hard on the ignition of powder and this is where the magnum primers excell.

As a interesting side note I used magnum primers on my 243 loads once without realising my mistake, to prevent any undesirable effects I cut back the load charge by a few grains of powder ( using 87gr Hornady projectiles) worried about increased pressures and now have almost used up all of them without any issues. Cutting back the powder charge rather than wasting the primers worked out for me.

Great Video Mark! I will say (from personal experience) that you are spot on with the magnum primers in the cold even in small cartridges like the 243, 6.5cm, etc... As for magnum primers in magnum cartridges, I've always had good success with regular large rifle primers consistently better results with one exception, ball powders. With ball powders, even in warmer climates I've had several hangfires and misfires with regular large rifle primers in Magnum cartridges.

CCI recommends magnum primers when using ball powders. Recently I was only able to get ball powder for my 300 H&H. I’m definitely using magnum primers, and will see the results.

I n my PERSONAL experience, I've tested both and found hardly any difference if any at all,. I've used federal gold medal match magnum in every compatible rifle cartridge I've used from .260 rem, .270win, 308win, 30-06, 6.5x55 swede, .300 winmag and others, only because I can get them in larger numbers. What I DID find, was in a few cartridges that I use slower powders in, I had much better SD's with magnum primers (going from 23 down to 6 on one occasion) but this was the exception rather than the rule. Other people have found different. I think it all comes down to, test your results and change your process if those results don't meet your expectations. Good video as usual mate!

I also had similar results. Found that using cci450's +h4350 with the same powder charge resulted in lower SD's than with cci400's. The 400's gave me higher FPS though oddly enough. Also a noticeably sharper recoil with the 450's. I use the 450's for hunting in below freezing temps and the 400's for at the range.

I live in Northern Ontario Canada. I shoot 243, 308, 300 win mag and a 30-30. I've never had any issues with Standard primers. I've had an issue with my 30-30 bolt action once but it was caused by a weak primer strike because of over lubrication. I removed the excess lube and the problem went away. A typical winter day here can go from -15C to -30C.

In the U.S.A primers are hard to get so I'm using what I can get. Currently using small pistol magnum primers in 9mm because its what I got. No issues but would like to be using regular small pistol but can't get them right now. Nice explanation Mark well done. I learned this one the hard way. Just started reloading for a 25-06 this last year and I bought both CCI200 large rife primers and CCI250 magnum large rifle primers. No powder/bullet combination that I've tried gives consistent results with the CCI250 primers. I have several loads of the CCI200 primers over RL-23 powder that shoot bug holes but will not perform well with the CCI250. Too hot of a spark gives inconsistent MV.

I live in the mountains of the N USA and hunt with 6.5 Creed and use lapua SRP brass and use 450 SRP Magnum and get a 2950fps and SD of less than 5 and ES of les than 10 FPS depending on the day. The regular 400 SRP gave higher SD like in the upper teens and mid 20's and ES of 30 -80's FPS. iv greatly enjoyed you Vids and Info. Keep up the Good Work!

I use magnum primers in my 243 but for a very specific reason. I'm using a fairly stout load of H1000 behind a Barnes 112 grain match bullet. I find that I get maybe 25 fps more velocity but the me extreme spread and SD are way lower. Helped accuracy beyond 400 yards quite a bit.

Ive found by accident that using magnum or regular LRPs didn’t show much of a difference other than needing maybe 1 grain less powder than regular. Ive had and heard of great results with both but id bet Itd be no different than gasoline as some large engines NEED high octane fuel for performance and some run poorly unless lower octane and theres powder type variations that ignite easier with a mere spark and others especially if older and weaker and as said, at colder temps, that need more. Higher octane fuel takes more spark to ignite and therefore works best in the proper set up. The primer is basically the spark plug and powder the gasoline so its all a balance. I could see certain powders doing better with magnums vs others only needing regular but still fine with magnum, but Im no expert on powders and primers, I’m only assuming based on my experience. I’m going to try this out. I’m running a 300 win. mag. in the US. Magnum primers are virtually impossible to get here right now and have been for some time. Regular rifle primers are finally in stock so that is what I have and am hoping to find they work great. It does get cold here and I do shoot in the winter but it’s usually on a nicer day. It is truthfully probably pretty rare that I would be out there when it is below 0c.

Greetings from the Future! (heh) Re: extreme cold conditions: When I was living and reloading in Fairbanks, I never used magnum primers for my 'aught six. Powder choice mattered far more than primer, and I never had a handload not go bang. (And man did my rifle love 168gr sierra match kings!) Admittedly I only did a hundred or so handloads that I fired south of -30f so my experience is far from comprehensive. I also had no issue with factory loads, and I went through probably 1000 rds of 9mm and 200 of 10mm and .45acp. I never did go shooting when it was below -45f; to afraid my car wouldn't start after. No plug ins at the range!

CCI recommends using magnum primers with ball powders. The recommendation is actually printed right on the box. I prefer single extruded powders, but with the powder shortage, I have resorted to using some ball powder with magnum primers.

I use cci large pistol magnum primers in my 10mm auto with 180gr bullet and power pistol powder. I would get 1300fps with spikes to 1450fps with regular large pistol primers. When I swapped to large pistol magnum and worked back up I now get a consistent 1450fps which tells me more consistent powder ignition.

Mag primers like CCI 450 and Remington 7 1/2 seem to have a slightly harder cup and will take a bit more pressure.I use them a lot in in 223 and the 6.5 Grendel in bolt action rifles.I live in Canada and it can be very cold as in -20 or more and they have performed well for me when near maximum loads with heavy bullets.Even though I am not always hunting but target shooting I have had very low ES and SD when shot over the Chronograph depending on the powder used.I am getting low on the mag primers and will have to switch to standard primers so I will do more testing and see if I can FEEL the difference and the consistancy. As always I enjoy your videos.

Well you definitely cleared up some stuff I've been wondering about... Deer season is almost here and the 6.5 Grendel I was building had to be put on hold. I've had an optic fail and the billet upper receiver that I ordered came in and it was out of spec and I didn't find that out until after I had built out the complete upper... So about to load some 270WSM but was just going to experiment with large rifle primers because I don't have any magnums glad to know they tend to work... I have hand loaded for a long ,long time and many different calibres , and lately for my Enfield collection witch is 303 and variants I have drifted towards using magnum primers . Using 8208 powder I find it gives a cleaner burn and once I have found the right load for each gun it give a tighter group.

I've always heard that you should use magnum primers with ball powders. I had a 220 swift Remington varmint 700 that I was using CCI 200 (so, so acuracy) with H380. I switched to CCI 250 and the groups shrank dramatically. Since then I use magnum primers with ball powders. Groups seem to be better.

Thanks Mark. I am testing primers on a 6 Dasher/105 Gr. bullet, as I am developing a load for a new rifle. I found that ES is noticeably reduced with a standard primer compared to a magnum across the load range and that Velocity to Load is fairly linear (no apparent node). However, the magnum primer I used, despite the higher ES, provide a nice, wide flat spot on the velocity graph - seems like the node i wide enough to offset the ES deficiency. I'll keep testing both primers for POI (OCW) and seating depths for a final selection based on target results. But the magnum seems to show promises.

i think you hit the nail on the head mark....i hunt in temps from 0 degrees C to minus 40 degrees C and had a couple delayed fires with std large primers in a magnum, at -35C on the side of a mountain around 4000ft elevation on a cold crisp dry day in alberta lol they fired but with a short delay.... trigger broke clean, crisp felt good like dry fire practice.....but the discharge was not as expected. both rounds were shot on different days and the primer in each were from different batch numbers..CCI primers. i pulled the bolt when i got home, disassembled it. there was no dirt debris, metals or excessive oils of that nature inside, no sticky points with the firing pin. pin strike on the primer looked normal. bolt was locking in and out of full battery properly... i build my own hunting rifles with parts i source out so i do know the equipment fairly well. so i thought next in line is the ammo..started with the primer and now i use magnum primers in my loads for cold temps. slight more of a crack to it but no hangers since the switch....freak thing, bad primers or temp? anyway seems to work good now and the delayed fire hasnt happened since.

The powder type used is the deciding factor for me to use magnum primers or regular LR primers. BL(c)2 and most ball powders get magnum primers.

Interesting. Makes a lot of sense. It always confused me that using the same powder as my 308 in the 300wm I would need different Primers. When it lights it lights. You can't get more lit than lit!.

I use magnum primers in small primer, small flash hole Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass. Only because some folks on KZbin recommended it. Theory being the extra energy is needed to equal that of a regular large rifle primer.

I know this is a year later. This is a very informative video. Just my 2 cents here.. I run a 6 Dasher in competition. The Federal 205M has always served me well. I recently wanted to try CCI 450s to see how they would do. On Average Im sitting in the 2-4 SD and gained 25-30 FPS switching to the 450s. Averaged 3-6 SD with the Federal 205M. Now this could just be a dasher thing but not sure. Going to test in buddies 6.5 creed to see what it yields there.

Very interesting video indeed! Now, if I may ask... I have a pretty good stach of Vihtavuori N570, which is a pretty slow burning powder to load .300 Win Mag. Accidently, bought LR primers instead of LRM (RWS 5341 instead of 5333). Given that I shoot in a moderate climate (Southern Europe), and did not tested such primers. Something not mentioned would be some powders are harder to ignite than others like ball powders and a magnum primer will do the trick, we have guys at our club here in Scotland using small rifle primers in magnum getting good results and not freezing conditions. Dureing this awefull primer crunch we're in.I've only got magnum primers.So the combination of ball powder and Magnum primers in a 22-250.To my suprise it was lights out accuracy and no presure sighns.So no safe queens for me during this primer outage lol

I noticed about a 30-50 fps difference between fed 215 and CCI BR2. It's almost not noticeable in the flat nodes but once you start hitting max charges and peak pressures it's a significant enough difference and also vastly changed the harmonics for me

I aso find different accuracy nodes with different primers. To tune it I keep the same powder charge but I play on the seating depth

Possibly important, absent ambient temperature, was your comment that you generally only use ADI (US, read Hodgdon Extreme)powders which are all extruded powders. Were we to be discussing spherical powders I suspect we would be having a different discussion, esp. since I recall one of the ballisticians from Speer/CCi writing that their magnum primers are actually designed to ignite spherical powders.

I accidentally bought magnum primers for loading my .45, I've been little worried about loading with them.

@@shibosuru If the load you are using is max back off a few grains and check velocity and check for pressure signs as you work back up just like any other change in components you should be fine.

Many years ago I did a primer test on a 300winmag spitting out 208 A-max pills and the results were interesting. There was NO difference in velocity between 210m and 215m and they both had the odd heavier bolt lift (10 % to 15 % had heavier bolt lift) ..., while the cci250's added an extra 25 fps and showed no pressure signs. I was using H-1000 powder. The Fed 210m/215m had better accuracy. 210m averaged 2,973 fps. 215m averaged 2,975 fps and the cci250 averaged 2,998 fps. from two 10 shot strings for each primer make.

I was surprised to see how well defined, shallow and how small of a diameter a primer strike is on a magnum cartridge rifle. In comparison a mil spec primer strike is a crater. I have no doubt that a proper mil spec sniper system is entirely different from any given hunting/sporting system. Operating requirements are just too different.

How will it affect a standard load in normal temps? Say 40 to 80 F, I can't get normal standard primers at the moment, so I bought 1000 magnum rifle primers. Do I need to adjust my load to accommodate for the slight extra power produced by the primer.

At least here in Finland I havent had any issues with normal large rifle primers in 308 when hunting or generally shooting in - 30 celcius weather. Havent heard of anyone complaining about 9.3x62 usage in sub freezing temperatures with normal large primers, but most who I know own one dont go out in colder than like -10 or -15

I have never experienced a hangfire. I shoot in +35 to -35. That would most likely be to contaminated components or ammo causing that not temperature.

For a long time we didn't have Magnum Primers. At least at the level of 7MM Remington Magnum or .300 Winchester Magnum. I don't think they are necessary.
