Holy shit this Casablanca chess is fucking AMAZING. Like, we can now see how modern players would play against each other from positions of past world championship matches and see how the strategies have developed over the years. This is also like skipping directly to before the climax is supposed to be.

Casablanca chess on computers would even be more interesting and awesome, imagine the plays that the computers can do in certain positions in that particular game, it will either be a bloody battle or just a simple draw but we know that is never the case most of the time and computers will always find a way to win in the most insane ways possible

I love it for several reasons. 1. They are all professional players and still they come up with different ideas in the same position. 2. I just love the concept of putting top players in sharp positions that the computer claims to be even just to show how easy it is to go wrong even if you're one of the best in the world.

Gotham, I am kind of new to the world of chess. Even though I have been watching you for years, I never really started playing until my precious wife gave me your book for Christmas. I finally started reading it and studying this beautiful game, and I want to say thanks. I am not young enough to have goals in PC games like Dota that I played before; I know I will suck soon-you can't stop aging. But chess is different. I can see myself in 50 years playing with my grandchildren. That's just magnificent. And when the day comes, I will be telling them about GM Levy, the reason why I started to play. Good luck on your journey!

I think this new format is absolutely amazing. When computers play each other now this is what happens. Extending this to the top players is great because it becomes more about who’s the better player not who memorized the most lines. It could be really cool if they let the community vote on different positions to make the game more engaging to an audience

24:44 Magnus didn't rush anything, according to the tournament situation a draw was simply enough for him so he decided to go for an easy draw instead of pushing for the win. He said in the interview that he actually saw that Bf1 line where you sac the a2 pawn and rely on the attack, but he didn't want to go for it since there is always a risk of messing up.

See, I think the issue with Casablanca chess is yes, it will always be an equal position but that doesn’t mean it’s a humanly equal position. Some moves will just come naturally to one side than the other, so there’s going to be a big RNG element wether u get a easy to play position or hard to play position. But that actually makes it a lot more fun, still less deterministic though.

i love the new format, and also love (as always) your analysis of it. As mentioned, the weakness of the new format comes if one person knows the analysis of the historical position while the other does not. Could this be avoided by having the engine randomly generate a mathematically equal position? Also though the hidden beauty of this format is that it will encourage deeper studying of historical matches rather than memorizing opening lines down to the nth level. That's a good thing.

@psymar
@psymar 25 күн бұрын
TCEC (the top computer chess competition) already does this although it's not always 15 moves and the positions are chosen to be slightly imbalanced, and the computers play both sides of the same opening against each other in a pair of games. the reason the openings are chosen to be slightly imbalanced is to raise the chances that the result of the two games isn't tied, i.e. one of the computers wins one game and draws the other

World championships used to frequently take place in two cities -- and more. Before WW2 you had as many as 12 cities, but even two of the Karpov Kasparov matches were split, 1986 between Moscow and London and 1990 between NYC and Lyon. It's only since the title split (and later reunification) that all WC matches have been in a single city, although some of the FIDE WC tournaments during the split era were in multiple cities.

We used to practice like this in chess club 10 years ago. Using chessmaster 11 game database. Choose a masters game one. Move 8-11 and each person plays it from both perspectives. Always had great fun and learned alot

One of my favorite chess variants I picked up from a novel by Piers Anthony about a guy who was playing this particular variant with a demon it's called pole chess you have an extra piece on the side of the board called the pole Play sing the pole on the board is a move from there the pole can move from any unoccupied square to any other on occupied square it may never occupy an occupied square which means it cannot capture however it cannot be captured It can get really complicated really quick when an opponent can move their poll between your queen and your Bishop for example knights become far more important as a result

It's very unfair if you just come to the board and get a random position. As you can see sometimes one color just clearly calls the shots although its equal, or one color is humanly way easier to play. Players should "bid" on certain positions they play, and the winner decides the color they play. For example: Carlsen plays 3 matches against Hikaru. They both have 100 points to bid on all games combined. Then imagine they bid like the following: Carlsen Hikaru Game 1 12 13 Game 2 74 11 Game 3 14 76 Therefore, Carlsen picks his color in game 2 and Hikaru in games 1 and 3.

These games where a player lets a queen or other piece into their back ranks because they know they can trap it are absolutely fascinating to me.

This is definitely a fascinating concept, though I think if it wants to be a more accepted "alternate chess format" like chess960, it probably needs positions from something other than historical games just because "happens to have analyzed this position before" is too much of an advantage that someone might just have "at random." One thing that could be interesting would be to play equal positions from computer-vs-computer games. There's a massive set of interesting, extremely high level games that can't possibly have all been analyzed in depth-and you could just create more if you need to-which you can use to set up the games.

I liked the contrast between the games, maybe you could toggle a a split screen with two smaller boards each for one game? That would help me see the structures a lot better :) thanks for the analysis and good time :)
