Magnus Carlsen with a rating of 2834 is the top seed at the World Rapid 2022 that has just begun at Almaty, Kazakhstan. Generally, first round can prove to quite dangerous for the top seeds as they are still quite rusty. Especially if you are facing a dangerous opponent like Samvel Ter Sahakyan. The Armenian might have a rating of 2531 in rapid but in classical chess he is rated well above 2650. Ter-Sahakyan is also known for his opening knowledge and attacking play. He opened the game with 1.e4 and Carlsen responded with the French. What happened next? Check out the game to find out.

There's some great elegance and calmness in the way Magnus moves his pieces and presses the clock. Just mesmerizing.

It's wonderful to see Magnus dabbling in the French (he used it against Naka a few days back). First tier chess has not really had a passionate French advocate since Korchnoi, so this is pleasing to see. Not that I think he'll be using it to the extent that Korchnoi did obviously, but the French is still popular at the club and Swiss level, and French players will get a boost out of the main man using it, however selectively.

@@claudiog7692 carlsen has been in some trouble in his rapid games, but he always makes the opponent find only moves to preserve an advantage and in rapid especially, this is tough!

3:10 many people have complained online about how this move is possible. Actually is a legal move in chess

@@Snir556 it is called En Passant. Just google it up

En Passant, is confusing as shit for newer players. Basically, if a pawn moves forward two squares on its opening move to be next to an opponent's pawn, the opponent can take the forward pawn by moving behind it to capture. BUT, only on the very next turn. If the opponent's pawn does not En Passant the turn after the pawn moved next to it, the move then becomes illegal.

that's not very fair, is it. this was his first game. every other game except the one he lost he played at 90+ accuracy, including three at 98% accuracy. same level in the world blitz - only two of the 21 games were below 90% and more than half of his blitz games were 96% or above. (meanwhile either one or both of ding and nepo played below 90% for six of the 14 wc classical games, including one game below 80%...)
