Ding broke down after nepo resigned. His journey to becoming the world champion was probably the most uncertain one in near history.
@delai86
@delai86 Жыл бұрын
can u explain that uncertain?
@chilledgh0st
@chilledgh0st Жыл бұрын
@@delai86 first he wasn't even supposed to play in candidates but because kerjakin got disqualified he got the opportunity to do so since he was the highest rated player that wasn't invited to play at candidates. But then due to covid ding couldnt participate in competitions making him ineligible to participate in candidates but luckily China hosted some small tournaments for ding to seize his opportunity to join the candidates. And even so he wasn't supposed to play and contend for the title match as it was supposed to be nepo (the first place winner of candidates) against the defending champion Magnus but Magnus decided to not defend his title leading to ding having the chance to take part in the world chess championship. And through all the odds where nepo is presumably better overall than ding, ding overcome the odds and beat nepo in the tie breaker match. So yeah that's why it's "uncertain"
@EnnioEvo

@@chilledgh0st you also didn't mention how in the candidates Ding was behind Nakamura for the whole time, but managed to surpass him at the very last moment
@Viewer13128
@Viewer13128 Жыл бұрын
@@EnnioEvo he was mainly listing the irregularities. the part you mentioned was just regular competition occurrence and isn't a part of the irregular circumstances surrounding Ding. In fact, if it's irregular circumstances, then maybe the huge blunder of Rapport and Ding leaking their prep by playing on insecure platform can be the extra mention, but probably not as relevant either, but is an irregular occurrence though.

One thing I really appreciate is that Hikaru contextualises the eval bar. Yeah a move could be objectively a mistake or even blunder, but it's not really when you consider human nature and time pressure. Unlike the braindead chat spamming "blunder" every time the bar moves 0.1
@8964TS
@8964TS Жыл бұрын
The eval bar assumes a perfect game and a perfect understanding of the position, but the advantage could be buried ten moves deep and no human would ever find it, and if just one particular move isn’t made, it goes. I see this in my own games a lot when I see in review that I missed an only-move situation and return to equality.
@Hahahahaaahaahaa
@Hahahahaaahaahaa Жыл бұрын
I think he does the opposite well too. There ARE times when the eval bar barely moves but it's a "blunder" because suddenly the game is SO much harder for one player without perfect play, but he's able to explain why instead of "engine has a better move."

Engine DING-GINE! He basically like played the equivalent of Game 7s numerous times in the past years. Not really an underdog skill-wise but the position he was in just to scoot in on the way to the championship scene is a movie. And as the WCC games progressed, it was like 2 things just waiting to happen: a Nepo mistake or a Ding freeze. Turns out time control went to Ding's advantage after battling it all through the WCC. Personally rooted for Nepo though and it was tough but overall, it was a brilliant chess tournament.

Nepo will be distraught knowing he missed SO MANY chances because he plays so fast. He should've won in the classical format, but just didn't take his time. Missing an opportunity in rapid is more understanding because you don't have all that time to think, like Hikaru said. I feel for him.

Hikaru mentioned in an interview that cheating at chess doesn't require being sent the best move. For the top players, it would be enough to be alerted about which situations are critical, so the player spends more time calculating for those moves. Like you said, Nepo needed a little better understanding of when to rush (to put his opponent under time pressure) versus when to slow down and think.

Congrats Ding. Impressive defense from worse positions throughout the match. Nepo has consistently been in better position after opening due to either better prep, or Ding playing dubious moves for winning position. But you can see he's confident in himself defending from worse positions if his risky moves don't pan out, even if he's low on time almost every game. Side note Nepo always plays fast and now you can see why. Because he's such an emotional player, when he's low on time his accuracy takes a huge dip and makes blunder after blunder. Fabi mentioned that players who are willing to invest a lot of time in early-middle game are usually strong in shorter time control because they don't worry about time trouble and this final game really shows.

Ding literally had an anime protagonist's path to the world championship. Let's not forget that he was originally excluded due to inability to participate in the qualifiers, then because of a Russian participant's... outbursts, a slot opened up. Ding had been stranded in China for years at this point and had fallen out of the period where FIDE considers a player "active", so he had to organize an emergency tournament in China to get in as the ratings-based substitute qualifier--not to boost his rating, his rating was already high enough, he literally just needed FIDE to acknowledge him as "active". THEN, at the candidates tournament itself, he had a negative score for the first HALF of the tournament, only equalizing in round 9, and then clinched 2nd place in the final round against the current 2nd (Hikaru). Then Magnus officially announced what he had hinted at, which is that he would not be playing, thus giving Ding another "substitute" spot, in the world championship. Then in the world championship match, during an extremely intense and climactic series where nearly half of the games were decisive (6/14), Ding wasn't ahead at any point! He was only ever behind or tied during the entire 14-game series, with Ian being ahead at 3 separate times, and Ding managing to equalize for the last time only in his second to last game as white And then he finally got his first advantage in the entire match during the final game of the rapid tiebreaks, winning the tournament He is definitely some kind of anime protagonist

In 2019 Ding had one of his most impressive tournaments at the 2019 Sinquefield Cup. In a field that featured 12 top-level players-the lowest-rated player and only one under 2750 was Nakamura-Ding went undefeated with 6.5/11 points and a tournament performance rating of 2845. He tied with Carlsen for first place, and the two played a blitz playoff match with Ding winning both games. Ding was the first player to beat Carlsen in tiebreak games since Aronian did it in 2007.

@@mattolivier1835 ding has been viewed as a dark horse recently since 2020 and overcame all odds to qualify despite not being the favorite and not having many opportunities or resources to work with at all. meanwhile nepo practically had every realistic reason to win and people felt this wouldnt even be a match at all but ding proved them wrong, thats an underdog

@@BlitzWizard94 AHHHH, you do realize that Nepo and Ding are almost equally rated right? They are also almost equally skilled in the game so Ding won more by luck. It could have gone either way. @@mattolivier1835 no i believe simply that ding had to undergo more challenges than nepo ever did to qualify for the candidates and struggled barely just for the rare chance that carlsen would not play. the ratings are surely around equal and i dont dislike nepo by all means but prefer ding as its a much more heartwarming story. if you were to say ding didnt underdo any obstacles more than nepo then idk what to tell you

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the insane amount of things that had to happen for Ding, a player who wasn’t even qualified for the candidates (due to his bad luck not being able to play OTB qualifier tournaments), to manage to WIN the world chess championship???? Russia invaded Ukraine, Karjakin lost his spot for political reasons, and then Ding got the spot due to his rating and playing a bunch of games to get enough. Then, even in the candidates, Ding was doing poorly in the first half of the tournament, only to improve towards the end and just barely secure second place by half a point by winning the drawish final game against Nakamura. Then, Magnus announces that he’s not playing, and Ding is up to play the WCC. Then, Ding loses game 7 due to freezing in time trouble, and fails to win game 8 due to Nepo’s bluff… and right when it seems like Nepo is about to convert his winning position in Game 12 and effectively win the match, he makes a series of blunders that allow Ding to win that game and equalize instead. Then, in rapid tiebreaks, it was three draws, and Nepo had the white pieces in the 4th and final rapid game, and was about to make a threefold repetition, only for Ding to refuse the repetition, play for a win instead of going to Blitz tiebreaks, and then manages to WIN the final rapid tiebreak with the black pieces to become World Chess Champion, becoming the first Chinese player to win (or even to challenge for) that title. That is such an INSANE series of events that this feels like a movie where Ding is the underdog protagonist lmao

I was team Ding Liren, and when he won I was jumping up and down. After seeing this video I do feel bad for Nepo he fought so valiantly and without the support of his federation. After losing to Magnus he probably felt this was his opportunity. I am still happy that Ding Liren won after he was forced to play during the pandemic in his best moment losing the opportunity to become the challenger, so justice was done. Will Magnus return? will Nepo vs Ding become one of the greatest rivalities of all time? something like Kasparov vs Karpov but with social media? Magnus staying out of the championship could be one of the best things that happened to chess ever.
