I was really happy when he allowed the checkmate to happen. In most games where someone finds some genius or beautiful checkmate combination the opponent just resigns before they get checkmated, and it kind of ruins it a bit. Thankfully Magnus is a good sport.

The point of resigning is not to disrespect your opponent, because not resigning in a completely losing position implies that you don’t believe your opponent is able to close the game. It’s like when you have a pawn that you can’t stop in an end game and all you have is your king, not resigning means you don’t believe your opponent can checkmate you with the queen that he’ll get. While knowing that your opponent is well aware of how to do that, you resign to not waste time.

That sounds pretty damn rare. I thought the 13-yo Morphy vs his dad game where he castle checkmated with rook odds was amazing. Do people realize he retired from competitive chess at 22? (Just sending out some Morphy love) Is there a real example of a long castle stalemate? (not theoretical)
@WaluigiisthekingASmith
@WaluigiisthekingASmith Жыл бұрын
Its actually not too difficult. Basically the idea is that your opponents king can move into a box with no moves and then whatever move you make if it isnt check or it doesn't open a square will be stalemate. The real question is how you still have castling rights when your opponent has nothing.

I've actually played a game as white where an early queen trade (Qxd8, Kxd8) left my opponent's king stuck in the middle of board unable to castle and on the completely open d-file. Later in the game I got a position where my opponent blundered making Rad1# possible. While looking at the move I thought I had not yet castled my king, so I cheekly decided to play 0-0-0 to place the queen's rook on d1 for mate. One caveat: this was a game between ~1200 ELO players so I doubt you'd see that line in a tourney.

I want to send out a public challenge to Magnus. I would like to challenge Magnus to a game. Not of regular chess, but of boxing chess. 1 minute round of boxing (or street fighting if you prefer) followed by 1 minute of chess. First one to get knocked out or checkmated loses. Magnus you are a great chess player but something tells me you wouldn't last 1 minute in the ring with me. And I would love a chance to wipe that smug look off your face

To people saying castle mate is more rare: you can set up a castle mate by force (for example, just don't move king and one rook the entire game, make two queens to force the king into the D or F file and castle). Setting up en passant mate is ridiculously difficult and often requires your opponent to make the moves to allow it to happen.

Even more amazing than this game or its finish: Levy can't pronounce "Zwischenzug!" and no White could not take with either pawn for mate. gxf is not mate. It deprotects h6 allowing black to play Kh6.

In the 15th century, a competition was held in the bustling city of London. This was no ordinary tournament, as it attracted some of the most skilled and intelligent players from all corners of the kingdom. Among the competitors was an Englishman of the higher class, a man renowned for his chess prowess and strategic mind. However, to everyone's surprise, a lower class peasant farmer managed to enter the tournament and make his way up the ranks. As he faced off against the Englishman in the finals, the organizers had the opportunity to disqualify the farmer for entering the competition illegally. But the Englishman, determined to prove his superiority, insisted on playing the match. "I will not lose to a peasant," he declared. And so, the stage was set for a historic showdown. The game began, and the Englishman and the farmer faced off in a battle of wits and strategy. As the pieces moved across the board, the tension in the room was palpable. No one could have predicted the exciting and unexpected turn of events that were about to unfold.... the Englishman confidently made his moves, determined to emerge victorious. He was a skilled player, known for his cunning and strategic mind. On the other side of the board, the peasant farmer seemed like no match for the Englishman's intellect. However, as the game progressed, the farmer proved to be a formidable opponent. The crowd watched in amazement as the farmer matched the Englishman move for move, refusing to back down. The Englishman grew increasingly frustrated as he struggled to gain the upper hand. Suddenly, he found himself in a seemingly impossible position. His options were limited, and defeat seemed imminent. In a moment of desperation, the Englishman made a bold move. He captured the farmer's pawn with a technique that had never been seen before. "En passant!" he exclaimed, as he made the unexpected capture. The crowd gasped in surprise, unsure of what had just happened. Despite this unforeseen turn of events, the farmer refused to give up. He continued to fight with all his might, determined to emerge victorious. In the end, it was the farmer who emerged as the winner, much to the shock of the Englishman and the spectators. As word of this historic match spread, the move that the Englishman had created on the spot became known as the "en passant" rule, and it became a widely used technique in the game of chess. From that day on, chess players around the world have employed the "en passant" rule to their advantage. Despite the drama of the match, it was eventually forgotten by most, and today it is little more than a footnote in the annals of chess history. However, a few diehard fans still remember the legendary match in which the "en passant" rule was first introduced, and they continue to honor the memory of the peasant farmer who managed to outsmart his wealthier opponent.

In baseball, it is the bottom of the 9th (last) inning. The home team is up to bat and the score is tied. The bases are loaded. There might be 2 outs, and the count might be 3-2 (3 balls 2 strikes). The final pitch of the game, the pitcher throws the ball to the plate and its a bit wild - it hits the batter from the home team. He gets to advance for free to 1st base. The players on the bases all advance one space, and the man on 3rd base comes home and scores the winning run - for the win! (I think I got that right).

It's a tough call. Some consider it disrespectful to play past the point of what should be certain defeat, praying for some miracle blunder that will likely never happen. Others give props to the guy for allowing himself to be properly checkmated, despite knowing that the game was already more or less over. So it ultimately just depends which side of that line the viewer or opponent is on.
