কালক্ষয় হয়েছে বুঝতে পেরে রাজ্যত্যাগ করে সন্ন্যাসগ্রহণ করলেন পাণ্ডবগণ। তপস্বীর বেশ ধারণ করে দ্রৌপদীকে নিয়ে মহাপ্রস্থানের পথে যাত্রা করলেন তাঁরা। সেই দুর্গম পথে যেতে যেতে যুধিষ্ঠির ব্যতীত সকলেই ভূপতিত হলেন। একা যুধিষ্ঠিরের জন্য স্বর্গ থেকে নেমে এল দেবরাজ ইন্দ্রের রথ। কিন্তু পথের সঙ্গী একটি সারমেয়কে ত্যাগ করে সেই রথে উঠতে নারাজ যুধিষ্ঠির। তারপর?
