(... continuation of my previous comment) Day 6 -- Devi Katyayani (Daughter of Maharshi Katyayan whose immense worship pleased the Devi and She Herself manifested as his child. She is the greatest warrior who slayed the demon Mahishasur. Even Lord Ram worshipped Her before the battle with Ravana as outlined in the Katyayani Stuti created by Him that appears in Mahabhagwat Puran) Day 7 -- Devi Kaalratri (Kaal -- death/destruction; Raatri = night The ferocious form of Devi that symbolizes the darkness of destruction. She's the slayer of Shumbha & Nishumbha. She engulfs all evil and the whole universe dissolves in Her at the end of Mahapralaya -- The ultimate cosmic destruction) Day 8 -- Devi Mahagauri (Gauri -- She whose form is pure as white She's the consort of Mahadev and resides with him on the summit of Kailash. She's the epitome of benevolence and is worshipped for auspiciousness, peace and purification of one's soul. She's the Supreme Mother Goddess -- most gracious and kind) Day 9 -- Devi Siddhidaatri (Siddhi -- transcendental, spiritual power (traditionally there exist 8 kinds of Siddhis); Daatri = giver She's the one who controls the Siddhis and bestows them upon her devotees. She's the Female half of Lord Shiva's Ardhanarishwara form. She's the giver of Moksha or the eternal liberation of soul. Both Devas and Asuras worship Her equally. Without Her grace, no Sadhana or Yajna can come to fruition)

This form of Aadishakti is the famous Mahishasurmardini -- Devi Maha Durga. This is the form primarily worshipped during the Navraatri. Nav means 9 & Raatri means night. The 9 forms of Devi Durga are worshipped on these 9 days with a concluding Maha Aarti at night to honour Her divine manifestations. Day 1 -- Devi Shailputri (Shail = Mountain; Putri = Daughter. Daughter to the King of Mountains -- the Himalayas. Being the daughter of Parvatraj Himavan and his wife Mainavati, she's called Parvati) Day 2 -- Devi Brahmacharini (Brahma = Penance; Charini = the Woman who undertakes it. In Brahmacharini form, Devi Parvati performed severe penance over thousands of years to marry Lord Shiva. She didn't even eat as much as a plant's leaf in this course of austere penance, hence she was named Aparna -- the one who never even ate a leaf) Day 3 -- Devi Chandraghanta (Chandra = moon; Ghanta = bell She sports the crescent moon shaped like a bell on her forehead. Wife of Lord Shiva's resplendent Chandrashekhar form) Day 4 -- Devi Kushmanda (Ku = small; Ushma = Energy ; And = seed A small fragment of Her infinite, primordial energy created the whole Universe. Her radiance outshines the Sun itself) Day 5 -- Devi Skandamata (Skanda = Karttikeya ; Maata = Mother Mother of Lord Skanda , the commander of the Devas)
