(VIDEO): During the Chicago Movement for Freedom (ca. 1965-1967), Mahalia Jackson joined his friend Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., when he was visited a church to preach a sermon about justice and equality. Jackson, also known as the "Queen of Gospel Music", sang the spiritual "Joshua Fit / Fought the Battle of Jericho", a song based on the book of Joshua in the Bible, where it talks about the freedom the Israelites found after Egypt. Martin Luther King called "negro spirituals" as "the most original of all American music", and affirmed: "I think I can say concerning this great Gospel singer in our midst, our dear friend, my great friend Mahalia Jackson, that a voice like this comes only once in a millenia."
Like King, Jackson was a devout Christian and Civil Rights activist as well, who sang "How I Got Over" at MLK March on Washington, where she stayed behind King while he was pronouncing his historical "I Have a Dream." See Mahalia performing there: • ♪ How I Got Over | Mah...

Anthony Yarrell If you read your Bible... GOD punishes all people for idolatry until they learn the error of their ways. You may not want to hear it but our ancestors were idolatrous and some of them still practiced the old religions when they came to the Western Hemisphere and wherever the old religious practices have remained rampant are the communities and countries that experience the worst poverty and extreme conditions until today - New Orleans, Mississippi, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, you name it. I am not saying this as an outsider. I am saying this as a Caribbean man who is 98.3% genetically subsaharan African. The GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob DETESTS idolatry, witchcraft and the like. There is absolutely no polytheistic or pagan nation or empire in the History of mankind that has ever withstood GOD ALMIGHTY’s judgement it isn’t just Black folks that have tasted of this. All the empires of man that worshipped idols of some kind all faced the same or similar types of judgements throughout the centuries. The same judgements are coming for those countries that are in power now that do not honor GOD today. Wait and see...it’s just a matter of time. Selah...

Man, she SANG her heart out for them people, and you could feel an incredible power go from her, out to everyone present!!! I love that song she was singing-Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho! Wow! What a song! I remember hearing this blessed song when I was about 11 years old (I'm now 57 years old), and it holds a special place in my heart now, just like it did when I first heard it! God never promised us that the Battles that we face would be easy. However, if we'll get in there and fight the Battle, and fight the Battle the way that God says to fight it, why, I'm telling you right now, that God's gonna give you the victory!!!

In 60 years we’ve lost so much as a people. - The loss of families made up of husbands wives and children, with a man as head and protector of the household - The normalisation of baby mamas where young women have multiple children for multiples of different inadequate men, all out of wedlock. -The vulgarisation of modern music culture, and - prolific sexual promiscuity where a generation of women, encouraged by the weakness of men, behave like women of the street But most of all what we have lost in 60 years has been SOUL. The “soul” so evident and vibrant in the voice of Mahalia Jackson and those present in the hall with her that night in Chicago. Even now, these many years later you can feel that the spirit of the ancestors were amongst them that night.

I can't help but think and notice the difference in the movements that Martin Luther King lead and the smoking hot mess that Donald Trump is leading. Those people back then were lead by facts, truth and righteousness. These clowns following Trump are being led by lies, deception and conspiracy theories. It's pathetic. If people want to see what a real movement look like then they should look at videos like this.

I'm telling you she was a commanding presence wherever she went. ...she was style, class, dignity and respectibility, not to mention in a class all by herself. .. (HER WIGS WERE NOT A JOKE, THEY WERE QUITE SERIOUS! )......LOL....today 's so called "Gospel singer's " would do well to take a few pages from Mahalia, she had more class and more self respect inside of one of her wigs... (yes,I did say this ) than many of the noisemakers of today. ..yes,noisemakers! this is January 26TH 2016..

Myles Burris So true! This shows what gospel music is for - to lift the spirit through the darkest of times. Miss Jackson showed how powerful the ministry of song can be. Now you would be hard pressed to tell if a song is meant to be gospel or secular. Just noise and show.

Wow. I can only humbly agree with so many opinions expressed on this page! Mahalia Jackson, for me, represents a great spirit in this world as did Dr. King. I think she did not take the mic because she wanted, in that moment, not to be a lead singer but part of the people who lifted their voices for Dr. King that night. She used her strong voice to lead the people while standing with the people. Where have all these people gone? Everyone today craves their 15 minutes of fame like a drug. They represent people with shruken spirits who can never lead anyone because no real love fills their hearts--only the desire for fame and money. I think Rev. King had such joy in his eyes--without a trace of impatience--because he saw the union or united spirit of these good people in that church that night. I hope he also realized, in that moment, that his movement, based on nonviolence, would triumph and the walls of Jericho, indeed, would come tumblin' down.

Because Jesus was the unifying factor. THE JESUS FACTOR, THE HOLY SPIRIT FACTOR, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER FACTOR. Sadly, we are no longer a Christian Nation that all changed in the sixties an early 70s and onward. White people respected Mahalia Jackson They respected her gifting and her spirituality. She had a profound effect on white people all over the world bringing them into a tender place in their hearts to be open to God and she led them right to the altar.
