Glad to see Michael Walden playing drums for Jeff Beck these days. He was on fire back then and I'm glad to see him playing drums again instead of producing. He's too good of a drummer not to be playing drums. This piece is ON FIRE!

@florafox You should check out the "Turn it over" album by Tony Williams Lifetime, it also features John and Jack but with Tony Williams on drums (which isn't a punishment to say the least)

@examinfo DRUMS AT 2:48..and what leads to it - a highly interesting start to a drum solo - still listening..and can anyone believe a solo this composed, stylish - already had Walden in the stratosphere.. now I'm allowing him to ascend. Send this link to someone you know who can count time - and ask them what they think of this. I'm thinking Mike Shrieve at Woodstock - thats where this solo is for entertainment value, logic & surprise For skills I dont know where to put it. Bellson? Chico H?

Finally! Someone who is a drummer or a very knowledgeable enthusiast. Pleasure to meet you! Your description is right on. Nzarada Michael Walden is certainly one of my top favorite jazz fusion, drummers. I first saw him in Jan 1975 at Winterland in SF with Mahavishnu Orch just after Apocalypse came out. They began with Vision Is A Naked Sword. I was never the same since. All I can say is there is no one else like him. He throws out all caution and takes huge risks at high intensity, but it is perfect. If I tried that, nobody would play with me because it would be disastrous. Michael Walden on the other hand manages to make it all fit. So perfectly in fact, that he is the only drummer we want to hear from that point.. We are so blown away by his dangerous style that we forget the great stellar drumner who proceeded him... Billy Cobham. As for other drummers who come to mind, Art Blakey had similar recklessness, but not on steroids like Narada Michael Walden. He is in a category all his own.

The drummer Michael Narada Walden went on to be a great music producer. One song i remember is "let me be your angel" by Stacy lattisaw, where e also played drums. This Band is Legendary, This is music when it is Set Free, not controlled by some money hungry fucks.

Is it just me or, does McLaughlin play the guitar riff from Layla at :54? Then you hear Ponty repeat it. Oh, and it's kinda weird that every time they cut back to Gayle Moran, she's still singing, but you can't hear her. Sounds like her mic is turned off.

John McGlaughlin carries on in the tradition of Miles Davis. He finds these guys you never heard of who are so good at what they do.Michael Walden and Ralph Armstrong are a testament to that statement. To the dumbasses who insist on saying that Walden isn't Billy Cobham, wow did u figure that put on your own? Or did your mommy help you? Guess what? She forgot to tell you that Billy is no Michael Walden either..lol

Does sound like a bit of layla played there. He does seem to almost laugh as he does it. Guess it's one of those things people do. The sax player in my band likes to sneak in silly bits in to songs like fitting a bit of the benny hill theme into a ska track!
