Yeah, it's Danny Gottlieb here, of course. I was listening to swiss radio station DRS that day, when they broadcast that show live. They promoted this exclusive broadcast already weeks before as "Premiere of Mahavishnu with Billy Cobham" (by the way, this band incarnation was just named Mahavishnu - not Orchestra). Then, about 1 hour before the show the radio announcer came up with some "important latest news". "Due to unknown circumstances Billy Cobham is not playing tonight. He will be replaced by former Pat Metheny drummer Danny Gottlieb. But the saddest thing about it is, that Warner Brothers changed their mind by only allowing the first 30 minutes to be broadcast", said the announcer. I mean these were really big events back then. When Weather Report was on tour in the mid 70ties, they were featured in the evening news! At least here in Europe. Those times are gone forever. Back to Mahavishnu. Billy once said that John even didn't fire him. He just didn't hear from John anymore at some point and was wondering what happened. On the other hand, there were rumors that he wanted an outrageously high fee. Maybe that's why he didn't hear from John anymore, who knows? But God thanks they shared stage again later.

1984 --- A mere 37 years ago. I was just 28 years old and I had been a huge fan of the Mahavishnu Orchestra since I first saw them LIVE at the 'Woolsey Hall' on the Yale U. Campus in New Haven CT in June of 1971 before the release of 'The Inner Mounting Flame' which was their debut studio album, recorded in August 1971 and released in November of the same year by Columbia Records. After their formation, the group performed several debut gigs before they entered the studio to record their first album featuring all original material written by guitarist John McLaughlin and I was fortunate enough to catch one of those concerts. We had never heard anything quite like it before .. and perhaps never since .. ( although there are many 'Copy-Cats' out there since then ) .. McLaughlin was the first and he is also the best !!! ~~~

I saw this tour at Festival Hall London. Already a big McLaughlin fan he walked on with a wireless guitar and played incredibly. It’s interesting here how much the material divides opinion. I feel if you replay and really listen you get it. 72 would not have made sense in 84. Everything had changed. Beautiful tunes and let’s here it for Jonas. Stunning musician.

As much as I love Danny Gottlieb, the way McLaughlin fired Billy Cobham (who played on the studio version of this track) was a dirty deal. According to him, he was standing by waiting to start rehearsals when he read in a trade magazine about Gottlieb taking over the drum chair. It was the first he had heard of it. Drummers are replaced all the time, but Billy had dedicated decades to Mahavishnu and deserved better treatment. That was a shabby way to treat a fellow musician.

This episode is odd and shady. The "Mahavishnu" moniker, to begin with, even if Billy was there initially on the album... And McLaughlin having quit the Hindu religion back in the 70s... Then you had Danny Gottlieb who was already on the album too, as an additional percussionist or something... Not even sure if he ain't the one actually playing the drums on a couple of tracks from side 2... Because Billy has quite a recognizable style ("Radioactivity"), and then it sounds different here and there... Not sure though...

I saw this tour in 84 in Houston, Texas on a Sunday evening at the Music Hall.! And that same afternoon we saw the Stanley Clarke Band at Fitzgerald’s.! On the “Find Out “ tour.! His band was a 4 piece group that featured 2 women.! One on drums and the other on keyboards.!! Sorry but I can’t remember their names.! But what a great day and evening of music.!! First time i heard of John was in art class when we were in Jr high and the art teacher would play music and he put on Right Off by miles davis and we had never heard anything like that having been brainwashed with the Doors, Led Zepphlin, Jimi hendrix, Beatles, TempTations, Supremes, and all the bubble gum music and the cartoons on tv like the Arhcies. This blew our minds and now we could play in bands cause now we saw the mix and HEARD the mix.

First time even heard of John was from Jack Johnson in Art class when we were in either Jr high or high school. The doors and hendrix and led zepplin was screaming and then we heard Jack Johnson by Miles and while our dads were all hip to it we we learned and tried to tell them what was him. funny now when I think how smart we werent :D. Saw John Luc Ponte once. What a fabulous concert, I have a crazy story about that too..

Mahavishnu was my band from early-mid teens, I’m a wee Scots wummin from Glesca now in early 60’s so not typical at time, early/mid 70s. I think now that McLaughlin was more style than soul but loved all the instrumentation around his guitar virtuoso. Getting back in touch with IMF, birds of fire etc. after all these years. Billy Cobham still the best but under-rated drummer evvah!

For some, the litmus test will always be his first, groundbreaking Mahavishnu Orchestra that recorded the classic The Inner Mounting Flame (Columbia, 1971), while the truth is that McLaughlin has continued to evolve in a myriad of contexts. From the Indo-centric Shakti and Remember Shakti to his trio with Trilok Gurtu and his late 1990s Heart of Things band, each of McLaughlin's groups has possessed its own distinctive personality. So, too, did subsequent versions of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, most notably the expanded group that evolved out of McLaughlin's somewhat controversial Apocalypse (Columbia, 1974), an ambitious collaboration with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and The London Symphony Orchestra. McLaughlin's eleven-piece band, featuring French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty hot off the road with Frank Zappa, would go on to record another enduring Mahavishnu Orchestra album, Visions of the Emerald Beyond (Columbia, 1975), but disbanded before it had the opportunity to perform material from that disc in its entirety. Still, the group toured the Apocalypse album, with one stop being at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1974. ~ The Mahavishnu (this time without the "Orchestra") that McLaughlin re-formed in 1983 was even more controversial. Along with original Mahavishnu Orchestra drummer Billy Cobham, the group's self-titled 1984 Warner Bros. album remains an unfortunate footnote in McLaughlin's discography. McLaughlin, who had been experimenting with guitar synthesizer technology from the mid-1970s, was focusing more on the Synclavier II and a digital guitar that opened up his sonic palette in ways previously only available to keyboardists, with minimal emphasis on his rawer electric guitar, and the album suffered for it. Still, the group, featuring a number of young players-Miles Davis alumnus Bill Evans on saxophones, Mitchell Forman on keyboards and Jonas Hellborg on bass, along with ex-Pat Metheny Group drummer Danny Gottleib, who replaced Cobham on tour-was a seriously in-your-face, kick-ass live band to which the studio album only alluded. The group remained together for three years, but made a stop at Montreux in its early days during the summer of 1984. ~ Those who own the mammoth seventeen-CD Montreux Concerts (Warner Brps., 2003), which collects all existing McLaughlin shows into one box set, are already familiar with these two stunning performances. But, aside from bootlegs copies, the video component of these two shows has remained in the Montreux vaults for far too long, making the release of the two-DVD set Live at Montreux 1984/1974 a welcome event for McLaughlin fans, and a revelation for those who don't realize just how sophisticated yet visceral both groups were in performance. A minor note: a manufacturing error has the 1984 show labeled 1974, and vice versa. ~ The 1974 edition of Mahavishnu Orchestra was a collective of eleven outstanding players, including three- piece string and wind sections that allowed the group to tackle the music from Apocalypse with some reverence while being a more practical touring unit (operative word: more, few bands of this size could tour today with any financial feasibility). But it was the core group-Ponty as McLaughlin's primary solo foil, keyboardist/vocalist Gayle Moran (soon to marry another icon, keyboardist Chick Corea), bassist Ralphe Armstrong and drummer Narada Michael Walden (a powerful young drummer who would go on to forge a mega-career as a pop producer, making his relative desertion of the kit a real shame)-who gave this version of Mahavishnu Orchestra its teeth. No, this unit was not as raw and unbridled as the first Mahavishnu Orchestra, but it truly was an orchestra, allowing McLaughlin to realize his increasingly broad-scoped compositions. ~ Those who own bootleg videos of this concert will be disappointed that only two tracks are available in video form, the 29-minute "Hymn to Him" and 22-minute "Wings of Karma." The rest of the performance is available only in audio format. Still, 51 minutes of this band is more than enough to demonstrate an ensemble that could, at times, be elegant and subtle, but at other times powerful and, while less raw, still rivaling the original Mahavishnu Orchestra in terms of energy, and extended soloing by McLaughlin and Ponty. Both tracks are significantly extended ("Hymn" was only 19 minutes on Apocalypse, while "Wings" was only six), and amongst the many notable attributes of the set is just how far McLaughlin had traveled as a guitarist. Still capable of blistering runs, his harmonic approach had broadened, with his lengthy solo on "Wings" as good as anything he'd done to date. ~ As strong as Ponty and McLaughlin are, Armstrong and Walden are no less important, the perfect combination of dexterity, sensitivity and keen listening. McLaughlin's solo on "Wings" would be nowhere near as effective without the dynamic interplay of the bassist, drummer and Moran, on electric piano. Moran's future role in Chick Corea's expanded Return to Forever has garnered considerable disdain from fusion fans but here, while she doesn't dominate, the small group sections benefit greatly from her presence. ~~~

I saw the M.O. a few times in the 70's, once in May of 1974 with the full Apocalypse lineup and a couple years or so later with the smaller lineup during the Visions of the Emerald Beyond person, billed on the same nights as Jeff Beck, when he was doing the Blow by Blow tour. I loved seeing Ralphe Armstong and Narada together. What a rhythm section they were . As a young bass player, both Ralphe and Doug Rauch from Santana were my biggest influences. After seeing Ralphe, I wanted a frettless bass. I also saw Michael Walden play drums for Tommy Bolin's band at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, CA just a few months before Bolin died. Amazing concert that was too.

Это не Mahavishnu Orchestra. MO - это трое гениальных музыкантов, убежавших от посредственного гитариста в 1973, возомнившего себя их хозяином. Теперь он более-менее научился строгать, выпиливать, сверлить, набирает себе в свиту талантливых музыкантов. И всех называет своей кличкой "Mahavishnu". И вся слава снова достаётся ему, любимому. Данный коллектив безусловно прекрасен. Вполне мог обойтись без этого "гитариста". Правильно размазал его великий Frank Zappa ещё в 1973.

I play the bass guitar. At least that's what I call it. How can you play a guitar with three broken fingers on one hand and two broken fingers and a broken wrist on the other?Anyway I always watch the bass player and focus on his/her performance.Helborg is incredible in this lineup. Really ? If that's true, he'll be their best drummer since Aynsley Dunbar, however Aynsley played much heavier. I got to see them both at the same concert. Journey was opening up for the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1974. Two of my favorite drummers. Maybe with Walden, they'd get back to their original sound before they went bubble gum with Steve Perry.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra had a very distinctive sound that was more or less preserved, altho a little bit more produced/clinical, in its second iteration with Jean Luc Ponty and Narada Michael Walden but this, as great as it is, ain't that sound

Each selection of those two iconic albums will occupy a slot on the 20 hour playlist. Can we agree that McLaughlin deserve at least three slots on that playlist?
