Mahbubani: 2023 Award for Distinguished Contributions to China Studies

Kishore Mahbubani, a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, NUS, is the author of The Asian 21st Century, an open access book which has been downloaded over 3.3 million times since its release in January 2022. He is also the author of "Has China Won?"
Here is the full text of Mr. Mahbubani's Award Acceptance Speech.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is truly a great honour to be recognised for my efforts to promote a greater understanding of China in the global community. I am truly sorry that I cannot be there in person with you today to celebrate this award. Sadly, prior commitments have prevented me from joining you.
The need to develop a better understanding of China in our global community, especially in the West, has never been greater. The return of China, the world’s oldest continuous civilization, is a perfectly natural development. It's an undeniable fact that from the year 1 to the year 1820, the two largest global economies were always those of China and India. The real aberration in human history was the past 200 years of Western domination. All aberrations come to a natural end. This explains the natural resurgence of China, India, and other great Asian societies.
Sadly, Western leaders and policymakers have not been prepared, intellectually and emotionally, to accept the Asian 21st century that is unfolding before our eyes. Fortunately, most of the 88% of the world that lives outside the West accept this. Most societies in the world, especially in Asia, have had strong relations with China for centuries, if not millennia. Hence, there is deep respect for the deep pools of wisdom in Chinese civilisation. By sharing its wisdom, China is helping us create a better world for humanity.
This is why the greatest global imperative today is to promote a deeper understanding of China. Even a brief study of the history of China, with its record of zero overseas colonial expansion, could help American policymakers lay to rest their deep fear that China is threatening America. It isn't. Instead, China's willingness to work with America and other global powers to address pressing global challenges should be seen as a massive opportunity to create a better world for humanity which now shares a "Community of Common Destiny for Mankind".
With this award in hand, I will redouble my efforts to promote a better understanding of China. Like the late Ezra Vogel, a good friend of mine who received a similar award said, "I am deeply moved to be recognized in China as one who has seriously endeavored to interpret China to the West."

Thank you Kishore Mahbubani! As a Brit who has lived 10 years in Singapore, and now 15 years in China, the common thread that unites both these countries is a political system that elects the most qualified person for the job, unlike my home country, the UK. Even the Greeks who "invented" democracy, knew that giving the vote to people who are too ignorant to vote was a bad idea, and an elite democracy was the way forward.

Democracy is actually a colonialism rebranded with a few beautiful packaging labels of human rights and freedoms. So well deserved, and not just as someone who taught the West about China, but also someone who taught those Westernized minds in Asia (such as myself) more about China too. Sadly, the America who feels threatened, meaning the elite who wishes to keep their power and control via SWIFT, world bank, USD, etc., *should* feel threatened because China's rise does mean the eventual dilution of that power. No matter how powerful, how technologically advanced, how nice democracies or how dominant economy a state/country has; it is worth nothing if our planet the earth loose its war again climate change & global warming. Having lived amongst Indians in Malaysia, I have a similar insight into Indians, particularly the Tamils and because I can feel as they do, I can understand how they think. You don’t begin to know another until you can feel as they feel. And especially as you can speak their language you can fathom the intensity of the attached emotion. You’re also blessed with that quality of intuition and living amongst the Chinese in S’pore, you are objective rather than being judgemental. Japan is the only country in Asia with colonisation ambition. They copied the British for almost everything. However, Annam (North Vietnam) was China's colony until it was taken over by France. Totally agree with what you said of China and its contribution to \Humanity. But nothing is done without hurting someone's feathers. Originally China like the rest of other races and ethnics groups were small group of people then progress made them grow and as such they take more space, therefore pushing others out of their places. Although peaceful or not violent, the end result was traumatic for the affected ones. I think the fear of China was created by USA politicians to justify their actions and keep people under their control.

Congrats to Professor but there's one point I like to point out is the US perceiving China as a threat is just an excuse for the US Military Industrial Complex for without an imaginary enemy, there are no profits to be made. The US is a country with many intelligent brains who are as intelligent as the Professor, they too know that China is not a threat but they have to made one to satisfy the greed of those from the US Military Industrial Complex!
