Enjoyed Maestro Salonen's conducting and glad to have the chance to see him in person, now that he is the music director of the San Francisco Symphony. I like the finale in this version of Mahler 3, with both timpanists each banging their drums with both of their mallets together for a grander effect. In other versions I've seen, each of the two timpanists use just one mallet at a time at the end.
@leestamm3187
@leestamm3187 6 ай бұрын
It is written to be played with both mallets by both timpanists. The percussion sections of some orchestras lack the necessary skill level to play it cleanly as written. To be fair, it isn't easy and calls for excellent players to perform effectively.

Bravo. Hearing the single male ecstatic yelp at the end, or should I say, almost BEFORE the music has ended, as one so often does from an English audience, reminds me of Sir Thomas Beecham's quip "the English aren't overly fond of music but they love the noise it makes."
@cmw9876
@cmw9876 4 жыл бұрын
It's a truly marvellous quip, I myself am almost totally without any understanding or education in music and have the "hoot & holler" virus. My favourite audience has always been that at Hilary Hahn's Violin Concerto by Beethoven with Slatkin and the DSO. Hahn cannot help her grin at the audience outburst at the end of the first movement. May good audiences always "hoot and holler". Music is for the people, not just an aging wealthy elite. I've heard voices in the background singing along at a Russian outdoor concert - it was the audience singing along to music from various operas, none in the Russian language. Music is truly the international language of peace.

My introduction to Mahler is comical (from an old Tom Lehrer song) and was fascinated with his life, but his music (save for Symph 1 & 2) I just didn't get at all. - I didn't listen to all of it, esp. mvt. 3, but when I got to the final movement...omigosh. the most beautiful music I've ever heard...and the double timpanists at the end! Holy cow! Ironically @Sanfranben the recording was Zubin Mehta and LA Phil...not SF but close enough...(I miss MTT - what a wonderful teacher) Since then, the recording of Bernstein with NY Phil shortly before his death is my favorite. But this is really, really good. And now, I LOVE the post-horn solos in mvt. 3! Mahler 3 will ALWAYS be my favorite...but now, the whole thing. It's such a shame the Jewish thing came up in his lifetime. The same thing happened to the prolific film composer, Max Steiner. Mahler was a dictator of a conductor (although world-renown) but his race hampered him, as all Jews experienced. He converted to Catholicism so he could ascend the podium of the Vienna State Opera, his dream gig.. Hitler called Mahler's music "Jewish trash." Please. They have ears, yet cannot hear. If people could just keep politics out of it...Mahler, Klemperer, Walter, Mendelssohn...all geniuses. but this performance is sublime! Bravo, Maestro!

I want to ask: ¿what was that bass drum + two timpani nailing it at the finale? I'm not sure if it was written by Mahler himself (I mean, yes, the two timpani are ok but also the bass drum ? :O ) Anyways... excellent idea! It feels very powerful and dramatic.
@matthewhackett4563
@matthewhackett4563 4 жыл бұрын
@@philharmonia_orchestra But that's not true. The piece calls for two sets of timps playing (almost) in unison at the end and the bass drum isn't written so why add it? Indeed for the last 13 bars in the score the instruction is (translated from German) "not with raw power! Saturated noble tone". Adding the bass drum makes it far too heavy. Overall though - thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Especially Philip Cobb on the off-stage flugel horn - masterfully played and the outstanding trombone solo.

This is indeed a magnificent performance of this majestic symphony! Congratulations to all who part participated. May I please make a plea to you not to add banners, such as the one across the top of the video after the performance, in the most appallingly sloppy American slang. The banner reads "Please stick around...". Such American expressions have their place, but not - may I suggest - on a video uploaded by a high-class organisation such as the Philharmonia. Something more dignified, such as: "Please stay..." would add some dignity. Thank you.

Mahler s Third ist simply extraordinaty and great. But I don t Like this performance for different reasons. There are much better concerts performing the Third than this😢

Salonen was music director of the LA Phil for 17 years - 17 wasted years. Sorry to hear that SFSO is now lumbered with him.
