Introduction to the work:
"... began a quiet song of praise" - this is what Richard Dehmel's poem says, as if referring to the magical moment in Mahler's Symphony No. 2 when the choir intones "misterioso" in the last movement: "Aufersteh'n, ja aufersteh'n ..."
Gustav Mahler is the first Kapellmeister at the Stadt-Theater in Hamburg and has his hands full: opera studies, conducting performances and symphony concerts. On top of this, he summons up the strength and discipline to compose his Second Symphony. The form of the work only emerges during the compositional process. At the beginning, still a few years earlier in Leipzig, there is the idea of the first movement, with which Mahler sets a funeral service to music. He later formulated his concrete ideas about the content of this music in a program: "At the grave of a loved one. His struggle, his suffering and his will pass before the mind's eye. Questions arise: What does death mean - is there continuity?"
The 2nd movement is "a blissful moment from the life of the deceased" and contains "wistful memories". In the 3rd movement, "the spirit of negation [...] has taken possession of him. The world appears to him as senseless activity. An outcry of despair". An island of calm is the 4th movement, entitled "Urlicht", for which Mahler set a folk song text from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn". According to Mahler, this is the "touching voice of 'naive' faith". In the 5th movement, "the questions of the first movement [...] arise again. Apocalyptic visions: the great appeal; finally the prospect of redemption: 'And behold: there is no judgment, there is no sinner, no righteous - no great and no small -, there is no punishment and no reward! An almighty feeling of love permeates us with blissful knowledge and being."
The furor, the force of Mahler's Second Symphony left the majority of the audience at the premiere in December 1895 perplexed. Its struggle for answers to the great questions of life ultimately made it one of his most popular works.

This is the most complete piece ever written. It has any imaginable emotion - from despair and misery to absolute joy and extasy. The finale is easily the most mind-blowing and staggering piece of music ever written. Im not a believer but anytime i listen to it I see the image of an overseeing and almighty God. Safe to say it makes me cry like a baby every time.

I as a critic disagree. Often I found Măcelaru too hectic and too erupitve when performing music. Especially his urge to destroy the epic in music by rushing over it really started to repell me at some point. Fortunately he became better in the last year. This performance turned out to be one of his better ones.

Hi Elena, unfortunately our rights to that video have expired. It's quite usual that artists or rather, their record companies will only grant orchestras like ours the rights to publish the recording of the joint concert for a limited time. Sorry about that!

Hunderte Male schon gehört, aber der Anfang hier, der Streicherklang, das hab ich lange nicht mehr so spannend phrasiert gehört. Auch alles ein klein bisschen zügiger gespielt als sonst. Durchaus ansprechend. Ich hab jetzt nicht die Zeit die ganze Symphonie zu hören, hab aber mal an die Schlüsselstellen im ersten Satz reingehört und war sehr angetan. Höhepunkt der Durchführung sehr gut. Glissandi der Streicher in der Reprise des 2. Themas wunderbar ausgespielt ohne Angst vorm Kitsch. Super Idee auch die Coda deutlich langsamer im Zeitmaß zu nehmen und das kondukthafte so stärker zu betonen. Der 2. Satz auch sehr schön, nicht zu gemütlich aber doch grazil. Klingt alles sehr vielversprechend. Den ersten Kritikpunkt den ich habe ist, dass das Finale nicht attaca genug an den Urlichtsatz anschließt. Die Sätze 3,4 und 5 müssen alle direkt und ohne große Atempause ineinander übergehen. Hier wird sich zu viel Zeit gelassen. Der zweite Kritikpunkt ist die Fermate auf dem Schlagzeugcrescendo wenn das "Erdbeben" kommt und die Gräber aufspringen. Das kann man mehr zelebrieren und viel länger aushalten. Es ist ja schließlich der Schlüsselmoment im jüngsten Gericht, der Moment wo die Toten den Ruf erhört haben und aus ihren Gräbern steigen. Das sollte man nicht so nonchalant wegdirigieren. Rattle machte das immer großartig. Auf seinen beiden Aufnahmen und Live hab ich das in Berlin auch so gehört. Sehr schön der Choreinsatz. Damit steht und fällt der Abend ja oft. Der letzte Kritikpunkt ist dann aber der entscheidende: Die Apotheose ist zu schnell! Deutlich!! Man muss das nicht so zähflüssig zelebrieren wie Bernstein das getan hat, aber spätestens beim letzten "Sterben werd ich um zu leben", das dann in das "Auferstehn!" mündet, möchte ich, dass sich Dirigenten die Zeit nehmen das ganze zu zelebrieren und im Tempo deutlich nachgeben. Das fehlt mir hier leider total, und dadurch verpufft die Finalwirkung unnötig. Ich kann gar nicht beschreiben wieviel langsamer für mich richtig wäre, aber mein persönlicher Gradmesser ist immer die Rührung. Wenn ich bei Ziffer 46, wenn der Chor das "Mit Flügeln... " beginnt einsteige und die Steigerung und das Tempo richtig ist, ist es egal ob ich den Rest der Sinfonie vorher gehört habe, wenn die Tempi stimmen, weine ich. Wenn es zu schnell ist, nicht. Hier blieben meine Augen trocken. Also war es nicht richtig. ;) Auch ein Lob an die Bildregie. Gerade bei den großen Tuttistellen mal länger die Totale zu zeigen ist wichtig. Gut, dass ihr an sowas gedacht habt.

Die Apotheose in schnell fand ich tatsächlich im Konzert auch erst befremdlich, hatte schließlich aber doch Tränen in den Augen! Es hatte seine ganz eigene Energie. Man wurde vielmehr mitgerissen. Das spürt man im Video nicht so sehr, nur live! Ein weiterer genialer Punkt, der im Video untergeht, ist das Fernorchester! Perfekt eingesetzt und sehr präzise. Ein Wow-Effekt.

Ist bei mir ähnlich, obwohl ich bei der Apotheose immer weine, egal wie schlecht die Aufführung ist, ich auf der Bühne oder im Publikum bin. Wenn beim zweiten "Sterben werd ich..." das Tempo aber stimmt und das diminuendo auf "le..." und das crescendo "...ben,...Auferstehn!, Ja Auferstehn!" besonders extrem sind, brechen bei mir alle Dämme. Dann bin ich wie auf Drogen in einem emotionalen Rausch, der nicht alleine durch Töne hervorgerufen werden kann. Mahler 2 ist das einzige Werk, welches diese Wirkung entfacht. Ich muss nichtmal eine Aufführung sehen, sondern das Finale nur im Kopf durchgehen, damit Tränen fließen. Die reinste Magie, der schiere Wahnsinn.

a great performance by the orchestra, choir and soloists. Unfortunately, the conductor's performance at the end of the last movement is (as with many) poor. The finale is supposed to be misterioso and Gustav Mahler has many rhythmic notes in it that were not followed - why? a few examples: last section Auferstehen , ja aufrestehen -pesante (seriously, heavily) zu Gott zu Gott -ritardanto+ note wieder zuruckhalten (again holding back). I miss the care (perhaps a little too much) of Leonard Bernstein, which I recently had the opportunity to hear with the young conductor Mr. Klaus Mäkelä.

今時の演奏というか、私はBereite dich zu lebenの後からのテンポが気に入りません。 何もこんなに速くしなくても良いのではないでしょうか。これではマーラーの曲の持つ壮大さが半分失われてしまう。 この曲のラストはオケの編成や合唱団の歌う音域の異常なまでの広さからしても、もっと壮大、巨大な建造物の如く立ち上がらないとならないと思います。 曲があまりにもいいものだから、演奏すれば、そりゃ、ブラーヴィではなくてドイツだからブラボーか。 とは必ずなりますけれど、もちろん演奏している人たちは素晴らしいし心も込めているし音自体は凄いのでしょうし。 でも、指揮の音楽づくりMusikleitungがこれでは、マーラーのこの曲の最後の部分の真価は出せないと思います。

Vielleicht würde eine Kleiderordnung noch weniger (junge?) Menschen dazu bewegen, in ein klassisches Konzert zu gehen. Für den Dirigenten kann ich natürlich verstehen, dass er nicht in Jogginghose kommen sollte, aber es kommt auch kaum ein Zuhörer so dahin und außerdem geht es doch um die Musik??
