I agree. The audio is wonderful. Have you listened to the recent (Dec. 2021) Mahler 4th with Dudamel and the Concertgebouw Orchestra? It is also stunningly well recorded (use those headphones 🎧), and the performance is a joy. Here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iauzi6Wsr5dlqc0 *(I left very detailed time stamps and the complete 4th movement text in German & English in the comments, if you’re interested.)* 😎🎹

That's what struck me about this performance. There are many fine performances of Mahler's 4th, but the recording engineers contribute almost as much to this one as the musicians.

This was my very favorite Mahler symphony - before I discovered that they are all my favorites! The Fourth has a charm all its own, however, more delicate, more naive, exemplifying the childlike faith that Christ said is needed to enter Heaven. As depicted here, at 46:22, the first sight of Heaven's splendor may not seem as overwhelming as in Bernstein's New York Philharmonic recording, but Orozco-Estrada throughout emphasizes the work's Classic rather than Romantic aspect, and it works well. The orchestra as always, was excellent, as was soprano Erdmann.

This is the first Mahler symphony I ever heard. I was sixteen and a high school friend who was a musician introduced it to me. I remember the soprano soloist was Jennie Tourel and I think the conductor was Fritz Reiner. I believe the 4th Symphony is the best symphony for a Mahler introduction, maybe the 1st could work.

I so agree with Mr.Woodall. The conductor superbly conveys all the aspects of 'The Heavenly Life' that Mahler gives focus to. The recording as sound is exceptional. There is a haunting beauty of the orchestral playing and direction that is impressive and memorable. I want to hear more from this elegant musical conductor. I understand he has been appointed the LSOs new Guest Conductor so perhaps I will. I will certainly listen to this recording again.

In gemächlicher Bewegung.

It's rather obvious that Mahler is more cerebral than emotive. His use of sound is more to do with the idea of music and less to do with the feelings it might engender. I find it strange that so many feel drawn to his music to the degree they are.

Nowhere in the whole piece are the low brass missing more than 46:22. That explosion is not nearly loud enough.

That might be because the only low brass in the symphony are the horns-the trombones and tuba are absent. Mahler originally wanted to add trombones and tuba for just that moment, but he couldn't bring himself to.

If you didn’t know, Mahler generally orchestrates his symphonies as chamber orchestras where different soloists come out at different times to play different themes together, and usually only has the full orchestra blaring out at climaxes, so this is exactly how it’s meant to be done. Moreover, Mahler 4 is considered a rather tame symphony as compared to his other symphonies as it is almost entirely based on the poem of Das himmlische Leben in the set of poems called Das Knaben Wunderhorn. Bravo to FRSO and Maestro Orozco Estrada for this amazing recording. Definitely one of my go-to modern 21st century recordings of Mahler 4

A great performance by the symphony, but a lot of very questionable camera work. So many interesting things were missed while the cameras were focusing on trivial stuff. Take the glissandi in the low strings at the end of the 2nd movement, for example. Visually fun to watch, yet totally ignored in favor of watching the clarinets sustaining notes.

Very odd for the soprano to enter while the final measures of the 3rd movement were still playing! Usually she enters before the 3rd movement begins, so is in place for the final movement, because there is no pause between movements.

I find it so funny that he does this a lot in symphonies 3 and 4, he really likes that upwards triplet trumpet figure. Can't blame him, it's a pretty cool bit
