This movement is probably Mahler‘s most famous composition. According to his wife, Alma Mahler, the composer left a small poem for her:
Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne,
Ich kann mit Worten Dir‘s nicht sagen.
Nur meine Sehnsucht kann Dir klagen,
Und meine Liebe, meine Wohne!
(In which way I love you, my sunbeam,
I cannot tell you with words.
Only my longing, my love and my bliss
can I with anguish declare!)
For this poem and extremely romantic, intimate music, this movement is indeed to be interpreted as a love song to Alma.
