Mahler never orchestrated the second song: it was done by Max Puttmann in 1905. He was an editor for the publisher of the songs: C.F. Kahnt.

The end sounds like he wanted to write a grand symphonic ending but only half the orchestra and only one of the choir turned up. Wonderful piece nevertheless though.

It's definitely very telling of Mahler to leave out the strings. Exactly what he's trying to say though, as usual with him, will take me a few listens.
