This is the piece that breaks me down every time I hear it. I heard this a month ago with Michael Tilson Thomas (shown here) conducting. It was magic. He’s dying from brain cancer and it was probably one of his last concerts. I defy your soul not to bleed when you hear it. Enjoy.

Such a wonderful rapport between conductor and orchestra. Marvelous, resonant string sound and MTT's restrained gestures achieve the shaping of the phrases. Thank you for sharing this.

I was there! It was my first live Mahler experience ever, and what an experience it was! Genuinely thought the roof of the Barbican was going to cave in during certain sections, and the sheer amount of emotions felt during those 70+ minutes was absolutely stunning and life changing. Of course, Lukas Vondracek was also brilliant, with astounding virtuosity and passion in the Liszt. Can’t wait to rewatch the whole concert on Marquee :D

genuine question - what makes this a fabulous rendition? I am a layperson with regard to this so I'm intrigued and wish to understand.

Very beautiful music. Forgive me, but at 7:50 something sounds off, almost like a chair squeak. And again at 7:52 - is this part of the music or in fact a minor slip up from one of the players? There are other small instances as well, but these are the most noticeable.
