Very fortunate to have heard this the other day at Carnegie Hall. I do not think I will ever hear a better performance...

This just made my day. I'm seeing the Mahler on Saturday night (and the Berg, Webern, Schoenberg and Brahms on Sunday) on the orchestra's tour stop in Ann Arbor. I'm incredibly excited, it will be a huge privilege to get to see you all again.

Master Rattle: I would like to see them in my country, Chile ... With my salary I could never reach Germany to see them, but I would pay everything I have to see them here. May Mahler hear me from heaven! :'(

Consider a bargain airfare to New York. During the season most of the world's great orchestras make an appearance at Carnegie Hall every 2 or 3 years. This year the Vienna Philharmonic will do 3 concerts in June. Also this year Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco and others. www.carnegiehall.org/Events/Orchestras. Hotel accommodations are insanely expensive but there is Air bnb.

I've got to say, after seeing this same group and conductor on their tour this past weekend, the Berlin Phil has a brass problem... as in... it isn't loud enough. Even from this video I can tell that the brass is coming off a tad weak. Every other instrument though... fantastic! The string section, my god.

Berlin's brass are virtuosic and sophisticated. They play their passages musically, without needing to create huge volume--anybody can do that. I assure you their well-balanced sound is perfectly intentional.

Alright, fair enough. I preferred the higher volume under Karajan, and I have friends who agree with my comment I posted 3 months ago. There are certainly times when that reserved sound is more apt but my problem is they don't come forth when the composer writes it.

I think the interpretative issue of appropriate brass volume isn't something set in stone (how do you know Mahler wanted louder brass?), but point taken with a preference for a higher volume sound. I'd just object to the idea their brass is weak, because they are some of the most virtuosic players in the world, and I think their sound is more impressive than either the Vienna Philharmonic or Concertgebouw, which I just heard in Carnegie Hall this season (along with the Berlin Philharmonic with this same Mahler 7th).
