hey guys, im so glad you like the video, i never expected this response, especially from non italians ❤️ if you want to, check out my other videos, where i translate mahmood's songs in english :) i would also like to address the "ghetto" clip. i dont think the lady was necessarily being racist, there seems to have been more of a mistranslation: she seems to believe that "periferia" means "ghetto", when actually it's almost the opposite (suburbs, outskirts...). i think she misunderstood the lyrics and tried to be #woke and it failed on her lol

Zoe Cirina More than an "inappropriate" question (like some have called it here), it's an extremely superficial question. She clearly didn't bother researching neither the singer's background (he was raised by his mother and got all catholic sacraments), nor did she bother checking whether Italy actually has "ghettos". The word "ghetto" here is a neighbourhood where individuals of a particular religious/ethnic group (are forced to) live. It's in no way a sinonym of "periferia" (the city's outskirts). Also, other than gypsies camps, I've never seen ghettos in Italy. There are poorer or richer neighbourhoods, but Italians and non-Italians cohesist in both kind of neighbourhood.

Both he and even the translator (the guy in the white shirt next to him) didn't understand the question because of the pronounciation of the word "ghetto", the fact that "periferia" (city's outskirts) is in no way a ghetto and, more importantly, the fact that ghettos don't really exist in Italy. Other than romani people, no ethnic/religious group tends to live separated from the rest of the population.

Mahmood mentions his life in “periferia” in the song money, during an interview a journalist asked him if he still lived in the “ghetto” because she did not understand that periferia do not mean “ghetto” but suburbs. Mahmood had a normal childhood in a normal neighborhood, never had money problems despite his father's abandonment (his large family owns numerous shops in Milan) and has never lived in a “ghetto”. Indeed, in Italy there are no ghettos, or places intended only for a particular type of people, and the Italian “ghettoes” are the ancient Jewish neighborhoods, very beautiful and often luxurious places inhabited by rich people. Evidently Mahmood's partly North African origins and the unpreparedness of the journalists led to asking Mahmood embarrassing and inappropriate questions (for example, they asked him if he respected Ramadam when his public biography clearly states that he is a Christian and a Catholic.
