One of my all-time favorite players. Fun fact. He is the NBA 's all-time leader in free-throw percentage at 90.5. Now if you look this up in the record books, the NBA list Steve Nash as number one with 90.43. They list Mark Price second at 90.39. The NBA implemented a rule that read, a play must have at least 1,200 free throw attempts to be considered for the record. Rauf had 1,161 attempts.
@teejaytan02

Wow. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info! The NBA should give this man the crown for the best free-throw shooter ever. It kinda seems like the NBA is trying to erase him from history. Geez.

Binniam Eskender Yeh. NBA has to boost up white players to keep support. NBA's been losing white supporters recently.So Mahmoud had to go.

BlabsMcGillicutty Then why do they diversity quotas to prevent white players from being signed, you do know about that right? League is 80% black and they still say it's not "diverse" enough because there's some white players.

I saw Chris J. In high school where he had games shooting 18/18 and 16/16 from the field. Clearly better shooter than Curry. Curry became a star in his 7th or 8th year, Chris/Mahmoud started being blackballed in year 4 or 5

This brotha came in the league in 1990 and his coach Gary Payton was drafted before him. He is older than all the guys he is playing against and still killing it. Ok. Don't know how the hell this is possible, but I had never heard of this man. After some wikipedia reading, I guess the NBA didn't like him that much. Anyway. He still physically moves like a professional level athlete with such quickness, flow and composure. He would in my opinion fit on any NBA team, even today. And he is 48 years old??? I'm glad this tournament brought him back which enabled me to see him perform, because this man plays a beautiful game of basketball! Now, excuse me... will binge some footage of his old games.

@DeCurtaRican
@DeCurtaRican 7 жыл бұрын
Folisaa : The skills are all still razor sharp. The question is his conditioning and ability to withstand the schedule. His body hasn't had a lot of wear, and the skills are there. Put it this way: I'd give him a tryout. There aren't many young guys out there who can stroke it like he can. He's still a Steph Curry type of shooter. Add him to a roster as 8th man. Maybe Cleveland can use him to spell I.T. He can play the role that Vinnie Johnson played with the Pistons...come in JUST to stroke it 8-10 times a game.
@Folisaa
@Folisaa 7 жыл бұрын
Historically the players can last on the NBA squad up to 42~ years old and in most cases they are post players that can rely on their height and weight. A 48 old point guard? You got to be kidding me. Keep in mind he's playing against the guys who are out of the leagues for the longest time too and he isn't event doing that crazy well there (this was a highlight video, he isn't going crazy there). Everything he does is literallly a couple times slower than anybody in the NBA.

What is truly remarkable about Abdul-Rauf is that he balled at such high level while suffering from turret syndrome! If you are not familiar with turret syndrome it is a disorder that causes involuntary movements and sounds. I recall seeing sports segments detailing how he would arrive hours early to the arena to give him enough time to do simple tasks like tying his sneakers, which could take an hour or more because of the involuntary hand movements, like the need to rapidly clap his hands over and over while he was trying to lace up. I believe medication helped but the disorder is ever present. So when you watch the NBA highlights and his recent play in the Big3 league, remember he is balling while suppressing the disorder! He is an inspiration to all!

I'm 37 and for the younger generation just know that Rauf had some personal situations that kept him from being a superstar in the NBA. He was basically the Colin Kaepernick of his day. Rauf was a talented player who was outspoken and ostracized for not honoring everything that our national anthem stands for! However, that didn't take away that when he was on the court and got on those red hot shooting streaks he was the most explosive collegiate scorer since Pistol Pete! His only issue in the NBA was consistency. One night he could torch any team for 50 points in the greatest shooting displays not seen since prime Kobe or Steph and then he'd disappear. I'm just lucky I only saw him play on TV during those road games where he'd even torch my Chicago Bulls and give Jordan the fits! From college to the NBA whether he went by Chris Jackson or his Muslim attribute Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf he was an inspiration for American-Muslims and helped pave the way for athletes being able to exercise their freedom of speech.

and see, I think he can still pass as well as most guards in the league, has ball handling skills on par with most guards in the league, and shoots better than most guards in the league. his one liability might be defense, but I think that deficiency would be outweighed by what he has to offer on the offensive end. And yes, I know he's a 48 yr old man, which is why I made the comment, i.e., I find it incredible that a man 2 yrs shy of 50 appears to be balling well enough that he could probably compete/contribute in the NBA. You've suggested that I'm out of my "damn mind," however, you haven't provided a reason as to why he wouldn't be able to compete, other than the fact that he's 48 (no dispute there), and because NBA players were "great players on good college teams."

Abdul-Rauf's game used to remind me of John Starks. But Rauf has the more consistent jump shot.

Dam this dude is still a deadly shooter. He is a better shooter than Curry. He shoot 3”s and 2 ‘s. And he is a better scorer as well. This man is no joke.

The most underrated NBA player ever. He could have been as good as MJ if not better had he had Phil as his coach surrounded by the right players.

I remember him going for 50, 60 points in big games in college. That LSU team had Abdul Rauf, Shaq and a few other cats who could play, and didn't win a national title. They should have gone to one Final Four, at least. A lot of people don't know that he had mad hops, too! He used to flush all of the time. He was the truth.
