Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association Whistle Blow 2009 in Youngstown Ohio. Great weather for Nov 28. Steam was supplied by Youngstown Thermal and the Manifold was supplied by Eagle Mechanical LLC. We had a great time blowing whistles and I took my dad's Whistle that was built by Great Lakes and was used on a ship that was built at the Lorain Ohio Ship yards. It's the whistle on the end with the three legged stand. I want to say thanks to Eagle Mechanical LLC for hook up to there Manifold and Thanks to Youngstown Thermal for lettting us use there steam. Everyone had a great time and we hope to do it again next year. The sound was much better in person so next year stop out and blow some whistles.

What pressure did you have in the manifold?

why is it american whistles are so deep?

The steam whistle started out in the UK as a small, simple device, and no one saw any reason to change. Fewer grade crossings, and most of those manned permanently, with barriers, etc. Here, thousands of unprotected grade crossings and the constant whistling virtually demanded that the boys in the workshop to get creative. Chime whistles were a response to the fact that the ear's response to audio frequencies varies widely from person to person.
