According to Google (so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt), Cotard's syndrome, Cotard's delusion, or Walking Corpse Syndrome is characterized by a belief that you are dying, dead, do not exist, or are missing body parts. Since the whole video is centered around imagery of active decay and a person vibing with the Grim Reaper I'm guessing the first scenario is what's going on specifically. back with another comment to go in depth more abt my feelings for this song- idk if it was the original idea, but in terms of how i relate to this song. it feels a lot like reaching your 20s when as a kid you had convinced yourself that something was gonna kill you before you reached 18, even if that something was yourself. you don't actively wanna die anymore, but theres this sorta feeling of being in limbo once you reach adulthood suffering from passive suicidal ideation. like a corpse that shouldnt be walking, still going about life and doing things, when it feels like you're supposed to be decomposing in the dirt somewhere. im only reaching my 4th year into my 20s myself, but its definitely a feeling that goes away for a bit and comes back to haunt you when you least expect it. springs on its way and the feeling of the seasons changing has really been messing with me, but with this song, i feel like it'll be easier to get through the next couple weeks before spring fully hits :) thank you both for this song

This song is a little hard to make sense of. I think it’s about someone who narrowly escaped death in a tragic accident, who then became extremely paranoid. She started to feel like all these little things were lethal. Someone walking down the street? Better watch out, the only thing separating me from them is the road. Or maybe that tragic event was a disease barely survived, and she became worried that something similar would happen. She dealt with thoughts like this for an extended period of time, and it started to wear down on her mind. She began to wonder whether she should have survived the accident. Life became a chore when she spent it in constant paranoia. The people around her started seeing the toll of this constant weight. “Are you all right?” They asked. What other answer could she give besides “I’m alright.” She felt like she had already died, like a piece of her died with her tragedy, and that the real tragedy was that she didn’t die with it.

i know that this will sound and seem very superficial, and it probably is, but as someone with LSC, i find myself weirdly relating to this song. it really speaks to the part of me that is frustrated, and damn near fed up, with feeling like my body (or skin) is decaying in spite of everything that i try to do to fix it. that's also accentuated even more by the fact that the skin of the girl in th evideo seems to be weakened or scaly in certain parts, and completely missing from the lower half of her face. LSC may not cause the skin to be completely scrubbed off or removed, but with how much it itches or burns sometimes, it definitely feels like that sometimes.

First time commenting after being a relatively new fan. This song speaks to some on a more personal level. I interpret the song to be about who’s gone through trauma and has given up on life and has tried to killed themselves but failed and has just accepted life and just waits for death. My alternate interpretation and how I personally correlate to me is this, I have never contemplated suicide but I’ve gone through a multitude of events all at the same time in my life around 14 that completely changed my outlook on the world and questioning everything. The events caused me to literally start thinking that my life was over before it started on constantly seeking validation that it wasn’t true. My personality literally started to decay and die and over the next few years I tried to mold myself to please people I loved because I saw so much pain around me because i wanted to help and the specific events pertaining to me I started mold myself to fit what I thought was supposed to be me and hide the real me, then ended up going into a stereotype of what I thought I was supposed to be. This whole thing created such a personal identity crisis that I to this day still struggle with. This is why I relate to this song so much because it’s about someone going through trauma and as result their sense of self dies and just feels so empty and numb. You don’t know who you are or who you will be as a result. Side note, I want to thank my parents so much for the therapy they put me into because if I hadn’t gotten the help I needed, I would of been in a severely darker place in my life. Lastly, I thank you ghost for another beautiful vent song because your songs always cheer me up and help get out my pent up emotions. Thank you 💜

just to write some of my rambling thoughts about the theory that the lyrics refer to Cotard's syndrome, as already written in the comments many lines really well support this theory: "something I'll never doubt: I know I'm rotten" or "My body should be cold"(because she's sure she's dead) also "no matter what I try, I seem to stay alive" (probably because she also considers herself immortal, because Cotard's syndrome is also characterized by a feeling of immortality, like you're a walking corpse maybe🤔) etc. P.S. I also think that the appearance of the heroines does not reflect reality, that is, they are all right with their faces, in fact, just because of the Cotard syndrome, they believe that they do not have some part of the body, or simply do not recognize their own faces in the mirror (something like Capgras syndrome, but in relation to yourself) P.S.S. these are just some of my guesses and I know my english isn't good

I'm a new ghost fan and I've just realised why I liked this song so much. I have to study a lot, I'm burnt out and I feel like a "deathbody". I feel like I'm just existing from weekends to weekends. A little strange there isn't an interpretation in the comment i've seen yet that's interpreting at least the pv if not the song itself to touch on what it's like to finally meet another person with a chronic condition at least somewhat similar to yours. [rotting/decomposing is a very common self-description for the experience of chronic pain and I also personally gravitate to undead characters as a disabled person a lot] the reaper character's [i wonder if there are names for these two? they're both very cute] presence is significantly more lighthearted than our narrator's, though they're clearly dealing with the same pain, but had more experience with managing it or at least discarding the internalized ableism associated with being chronically ill. Even their mask has a cheeky reference to missing eyes sort of, they clearly don't share our narrator's self-deprecation about it even if the progression from 'should be cold' to 'decomposed' actually implies they're further along with their symptoms. The segment with them missing eyes is spooky and such sure [though you'll see it coming pretty easily] but narratively it's clearly a relief to formally have them open up to the narrator about this, and to officially confirm the two are similar and though the narrator won't get better it's not as hopelessly miserable an experience than expected. My two cents anyway :) I'm not usually one to type up my interpretations considering art is better experienced as is but it felt like this somewhat obvious angle was sorely missing from the discussion since readings about disability are shockingly unpopular even for openly disabled artists
