Maid or Family?

Featuring three ladies who have been striving in Singapore as foreign domestic helpers. Each of them have touched us by being exemplary in building a harmonious relationship with their employers. From them, we learn that family needn't necessarily be linked by blood, all it takes is mutual understanding, kindness, and respect (the recipe for a peaceful family unit to us)!
Our FDWs can be family too.

I can understand her. My grandma eat so little, that's why I ask her back then when she still alive. She said she can't eat more than that because her stomach can't take it. She can't eat normal serving in one stitting that's why she eat enough but she likes to chew something occasionally. When i thought about it, i also took after her. Eventhough it's not that bad. I just eat normal serving. But i cam't eat more than that unlike others. My stomach get full really easely

I'm not saying that some families treat their domestic employers fairly, I am saying this situation comes from an extreme capitalist world, where we will do anything to survive, even if it means the huge sacrifice these women have to make.

@@palomaruz3169 note that these jobs are not all that unwanted. A nanny’s job is on high demand especially in countries where both parents have to work. I’m fact, my cousin’s nanny is paid $3500 a month because that’s how much her rates are. That’s more than what graduates in Singapore get. So there are many who willingly be nannies for extra money or because graduating from college doesn’t get you much anyway. Why not work at a place which is in demand?

I miss my Nanny (my babysitter) I used to call her auntie. She worked for us for 24 years until she was no longer able to work anymore and we took care of her. She passed away years later after she was sent back to her hometown and I found out two weeks after her death and I'm still hurting until today. I miss her and love her each and everyday. Gross. Edit: This comment is gross to me because of the underlying layers of classism and elitism in it. People whose families can afford to outsource their childcare and housework often speak of the people they PAY to take care of them as "family." They're not family. YOU PAY them. Often this false perception of paid-employee-as-family on the part of the employer allows the employer to justify all sorts of boundary-crossings and exploitation of labor ("You shouldn't need that time off. Come on 'vacation' [really just continual work] with us. You're family.") There is no way that someone you or your family pays to care for you is your soulmate. That is an entirely one-sided relationship. Did you know many slaveholding families used to imagine they received love from the people they held captive and forced to care for their children? Delusion? Narcissism?

I have a domestic helper too and she is my family. She is older and I treat her like my grandma and She treats me like her grandson. I am so happy to have her. I cannot thank her enough for the help she does. Sometimes I do feel bad for her as she has to work at this age but she is very independent and doesn't take money for free and the only way to give her salary is to employ her. It works for both of us!

And even when i had to go far away to go to college, she would drop by our house and look for me. She doted on me a lot to the point where her younger children got jealous. I ve been a maid myself for 2 years. About 15 years ago I was in Jidhafs Bahrain, and lucky me, my madam and her family treats me nice. We just few years of age gap, maybe thats why. I heard bad stories, some are my fellow maids. Overworking hours, verbal (and physical) abusive, unpaid salary, that s real. But whenever my boss reads or heard this kind of mistreatment she and her husband always said "you re working for me, but you re still a human too, why would i treat you that way, when you re here to help me taking care of my family, then you re part of the family" may Allah always protect the family, i missed them.

for 11 years of my life, I had a nanny from the Philippines and she is the most special person to me. She was like a second mother to me and she watched me grow up from the day I was born. She loved me like her own daughter and left her whole family in the Philippines to provide money for them and as a family, we made sure every single one of them was taken care of. I now live in a different country so she doesn't work for us yet I make sure to ring her every week, provide her with money for her and her family and I miss her like crazy. She was the best person I had ever known and Covid is keeping us apart. people who work as nannies are such amazing people. Always treat them with kindness. ❤️

This is why I treat them as my extended family. When we eat, we eat together as family. We share each other's stories and joke with each other. My mother made sure that we didn't take them for granted. Their help is a privilege. Now my mom is gone, we let our employees make decisions when it comes to managing the house. They are unsupervised. We (siblings) live abroad. So, we trust our employees. They have been with us for an exceedingly long time as a family.

I miss my nanny who has been with me since I was 7 years old. She knew me so well, she saw my flaws but she still loved me. We fight sometimes because of misunderstanding but i always love her no matter what. She is like my big sister to me. Every night before we go to sleep, we always have a small talk about her life, her family in the province, her future plans, etc. And now, she’s married with an american guy and is now a mom. This makes me sad because my aunt is wealthy enough to hire these live-in maids but she taught her kids to treat them only as maids. The few times that I came over to her house and hung around, I could see how disrespectful her kids were being to those ladies, with one being significantly older than the women in this video (must be in her 60s). One time around 11pm, she even told her kid to come to that maid's room, woke her up and asked to come make some food for her husband. Then in the morning, she would have to be up at like 5 to prepare breakfast for their whole family. I just felt so bad because that lady was sweet and honest just like the people in this video, yet she was treated poorly and with no respect whatsoever from my aunt's family.

Thats messed up. We used to have a non live-in maid around 7 years ago and we all treated her like our family. My grandma was still very rude tho but the auntie knew how to stand up for herself so it was so funny to see how defeated my grandma would look after. This is the problem with inequality, I can get why this is preached, you know how old and alone people in the developed countries are robbed and harassed more? Because human nature tells you the odds there, here if you become too warm with your maids they can get jealous as well and cause you harm, there is always some news article of families in developing countries being murdered by their own maid and their allies because they have first hand information about the wealth of their employer, of course all of this inequality is reducing only because the economy is getting more stable, unlike the past, stable and good economy dictates human behaviour, let's not blame anyone trying to keep anyone in check, as a warm modern society we still keep a check on a lot of things and still wrongly let misdeeds flourish as well

In india, we used to have a domestic helper too and it was much easier to talk to her than my own mom. My parents were in a different country at that time so we only talked around once a week. I also used to hang out with the domestic helpers kids more than my own sister and cousin because they only lived 5 minutes away and we went to the same tutor. I definitely miss hanging out with them more than I missed my family while they were in Canada and I was in India.

I used to have home helpers too, she’s very nice and we treat her like a family, but she doesn’t sit on the dining table to eat, instead she eats in the kitchen cuz she knows that when I smell spice I will sneeze, and she likes chilly a lot XD. Our maid actually have her own room and bathroom and we always give her food from what we cook but i still feel sorry for her since she left her kids and came to work as a maid just to let them live a good life.

I guess it’s sorta different everywhere. When I was still back in China I remembered families who have maids or babysitters who we called “hourly caretakers” are families who were super wealthy and if they would have live in maids then that was like billionaire level. After my family moved first of all we didn’t have that much money to hire anyone to take care of me second it was honestly hard for us to accept anyone who’s a total stranger to live in ur house or even do the most basic daily things with/for you. I just that’s kinda hard to imagine. My uni friend from Hong Kong told me they all had maids from southeastern Asian countries, I was shocked how it’s ubiquitous for them. I respect everyone who sacrifices their own time with family and has to work in another country. I’m also touched to see how these families hiring maids to help them in a way and treat them so well

We have like more than a dozen of maids in our house but I have never spoken rude towards them because they are just so sweet and caring. Sometimes, they understand me more than my parents. They sacrifice not seeing their children grow up and some are even being cheated on by their spouses just so they can earn more for the future of their family
