Maidaan spends too much time on the build-up, languishing among cliches and stereotypes for far too long.

Maidaan Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Maidaan isn’t so much about the heroism of the players as it is about everything that was in their way, choing to focus on the victim narrative. The missed opportunity comes more sharply into focus film ki last act mein. Its 1962 aur Jakarta mein ho rahi Asian Games meim controversy erupt hoti hai jab Indian official Guru Dutt Sondhi Indonesian government ke behavior par critical statement ek dete hain. This leads to demands of Indian temas being ousted from the game, in one scene you see a mob of violent protestors attack the bus the unsuspecting football team is in. Despite the loud hostilities, injuries, and a coach coughing up blood, the team puts its best foot forward and goes on to deliver the kind of performance that’s instantly historic. Capitalizing on the anger the film knows this display of hostility will arouse in the audience, AR Rahman’s score kicks up many many notches, as DOPs Tushar Kanti Ray and Fedor Lyass design sublime and rousing POV shots, taking you within the game, right next to the football being kicked around in the most immersive, exhilarating fashion. The sportsmen are flying in slow motion, crying, yelling, screaming, their pent up frustration letting out. Despite having watched the film for 2.5 hours at this point, all you know about these men is that the football federation has tried to stop them every step of the way, but when this sequence is handed over to AR Rahman, it comes alive, unlike the mostly static film that preceded it.

Sucharita, i think this review is severely marred by a lack of research as to the scene of sports in India back then. Firstly, cricket was NOT very popular in the 50s and 60s. It was mostly a sport played by rich folks ke launde. India on the whole wasn't a very sporty nation to begin with which is understandable cause we had more important stuff to juggle with. Also, I do not think there was any point exploring SA Rahim's religious identity here cause there's zero lore aboit it and any speculations or odd forays will only come off as disrespectful. Chak De India is a 100% fictional tale, whereas this isn't one.

Here's my quick response to your main remarks: The movie doesn't feel long and laborious AT ALL. Even though it did not touch upon the players' individual lives, the camaraderie shown among them with Ajay being their leader really touched me deep down. It's a sports movie, for goodness sake. Since the movie is based on a true story, I really wonder how else they could've depicted Priyamani's role. Please try to be a bit smarter in choosing a feminist's battle. AR Rahman's background score is the soul of this movie, and it only enhanced every single moment. The orchestration by the maestro is astounding. I live in Canada, and people at the theater stood up and applauded with such deep pride at the end of the movie, but your review painfully belittles this fabulous piece of art. Maidaan is the greatest Indian sports movie ever made. Period.

You dont judge a film like this on the technical aspects of film making, we are more than happy that someone has made a movie about the golden era of Indian Football, and in terms of portraying the history of Indian football to the people who dont know anything or have less interest in indian football I think the movie is successfully done its job.

Not at all laborious. In fact, very well paced and most importantly had a lot of Football with adequate training montages. Fabulous rendition of the golden age of Football with great casting of actors who could actually play Football. A much better film than 'Chak De'. The hockey players didn't justify their roles while playing hockey in Chak De. Sorry, you have not played Football so you don't know how well the film was made The entire audience in the theatre gave a resounding applause when the film ended.👏

Sure there should be made movies with female leads and celebrated. But what has that to do with this movie? Especially when this is a biographical story based on a true story, you can't just change the gender of the lead who was a real person just because we need the variety we've been missing. Also the way priyamani was standing on the phone and crying was shown because that's how the things were back then, you can't just change portraying facts of a movie based in the past just cause of the evolving nature of ideologies in the present. Both are different things and should be talked about in the right places.

It is wrong to judge the cinema solely by length or the no. of writers, the primary motive is to spread the stiry, I personally follow sports extensively but never knew about India's glory in football during that time, this move makes me feel ashamed yet happy and that is how it is a success....

If you understand football, you’d identify the details that these guys went into for filming the matches. I was in tears watching that final match not because of the emotion the actors were showing but because how the filmmakers took the pain to understand football tactics and showed them successfully from so many angles and so much intensity. The movie could have used a bit less drama and the same bland acting of ajay devagan irrespective of the genre but the boys acting and intensity was amazing.

Almost every sports movie has to follow a certain template to a certain extent but doesn't mean that it won't be enjoyable, also results are predictable in pretty much any sports movie but the point is if it can make the audience root for the win and cheer when it happens.

The film lacks in proper characterization - we don't know much about the players even at the end - just their skills in some way. The ego clashes disappear just like that. Ajay Devgn plays the role but has one-sided characterization as a coach - not much about anything else or even his past before the coaching stint. The best part about the film - 40 minutes till the climax - brilliant cinematography, sequences, and rousing score. The rest of the film is shoddy compared to Chak De India. The ingenuity needed a better foreshadowing at the early sequences - some talk about formations and why to use them could have helped too.

I feel like a discussion with the director regarding the choices he made with a critic would be really interesting. Especially when the film isn't great nor terrible. C'mon get Amit Sharma on! Also whenever I see multiple writers attached with a film I instantly know it's gonna be mid. PS: Most of the dramatic scenes(70%) were shot by 2019. This was supposed to come out in 2020 Nov. Only the matches were left. And then covid arrived and they finished shooting in 2022.

This movie was destined for massive failure the moment they decided to make it about football. We are a cricket monopoly and no other sport can even remotely come close to the popularity of Cricket. Football is the second most popular sport in India. Hockey is not the most popular ,but still it is a superhit. It's much more about how the movie is made, than on which sport the movie is made on. I don't know anything about basketball but the last dance was a very awe inspiring documentary. There have been many movies based on cricket which have bumbed on social media. P. S - cricket maybe the most popular in India but football is more exciting. Cricket is only played by 9 countries lmao

Tamil Nadu has all players for Indian football team and infact entire 11 to 20 member team can easily be selected from Tamil Nadu itself. But India controlled by UP, Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra vowed not to select any from Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu as a separate independent nation can beat Brazil, France, Argentina, Croatia etc. in Football FIFA cup but sadly Tamil Nadu is just a state in India and gets beaten and thrown out in all sports by other states especially Vadakkans. Make a movie of how a Tamil Nadu players struggling to shine in all sports despite having full potential and talent that India doesn't recognise and faced numerous difficulties to play for India itself...
