Maiden Voyage! We have purchased an Aluminium Crowther Catamaran and moved onboard last week. We are now living aboard our sailboat as full time liveaboards and we are about to depart the marina for the first time and sail SV Shining Light on her first expedition. There are a few bumps along the way as we are getting used to our new boat, come learn what living on a boat is all about! Jumping on a boat cold is always trickery, if that is the only problems then you are coming off pretty good.

Yea we agree. So far so good 👍. All these things are to be expected hey. We plan on doing a shake down up the coast so we'll see how that goes but we don't anticipate anything major

​@@sailingwiththejamess Take spares engine belts .. raw water pump rotors Filters for oil fuel and water. Rope .. Duct tape check for the through through hull plugs ..Stainless steel jubilee clips cable ties..fuses wire brushes switch cleaner... WD... Or other release oil marine grade lithium grease ... Duct tape..check your anchor chain and road is all good and tied off... Fewer things more sickening than dropping the anchor and loosing everything 😭...😂😂 over the side. Duct tape clevis pins spare fasteners and washers. You know the score...always carry a piece of spare ply big enough to cover the largest broken window incase of an accident..😊 Shining lights a good name...

I noticed that you said duct tape 3 times. It must be super important lol. I have a few rolls on board, the tear away type and the silver stretchy type that we call million dollar tape. There is this rescue tape that is self emalgimating that is supposed to be good enough to even effect hydrolic repairs that I am looking into l. It's that or a pipe bandage.

We love the boat works! When we were there last we got delayed waiting for trades. It's a real good idea to book in advance for the things you know about and save the favours for the things you don't lol.

What was the problem with the anchor? Was it piling the chain on the deck?

I was dropping the anchor from the helm station and didn't realise that the anchor was stuck. Cait told me about the chain nice and early so there wasn't much chain on the deck. The anchor was just pulled up tight and jammed with the snubbed rope. Super easy to fix which are my favourite problems lol.

If you can't get the outboard started and you are on the boat, how do you get to shore? Would you have to call a friend to come get you? Glad the outboard eventually started!

It all depends, we have oars in our tender for these occasions but the tidal currents in the Gold Coast would be to strong to row in so we would have had to call vmr (volunteer marine rescue).

built lived Crowther 45 in the 80's, Lock was way ahead of his time, your design had the improvements of canted hulls, stepped underwing clearance. Cheers!

Awssome! What was the name of yours? Legendary designer, we have met a few people along our travels who had met him and say that he was way ahead of his time! I love the crowther flare at the bows, something unique and often sometimes easy to spot another crowther design boat. Are you still sailing yours? 💜💜 Cait

Bugger about the outboard. What is the issue with it? Would have been a huge bugger getting stuck at the dock with groceries 😮

Hahaha yes it was a bugger and we were running late aswell lol. The needle was stuck to the seat and not letting fuel into the bowl. I have a bit of footage I'll put in next week vid

​​@@sailingwiththejamess The newer petrol types tend to gum up the carbs a lot quicker than petrol of old plus the fuel in a lot of places is dirty .. inline filters and carb cleaner and some damp start the boater and bikers friends..😂

Outboard playn up is my top 3 most frustrating things, especially if others with are "trying" to be helpful. If u get up Indo way, check out Kalimantan Marine Engines, 15hp 2 stroke (less issues vs 4) for ~1.2k. As for Cat power/efficiency. Single diesel engine one side = drive power when needed, charges batteries, heats water, less maint & parts. Elec engine other side = when it'll do the job.

Mmm great minds think alike. That is my plan exactly. Thanks for the heads up about there to get the outboard, I will definitely check them out as I am babying this one till we get to indo. My eventual plan is to make one side electric but it may be a bit down the road as I have sooo may other things on my wish list before we get to that unless the boat has other ideas and wants a replacement early that it lol. I figure they are moving foward so fast in that space that it may not hurt to put it off for a year or so anyway. -sam

Did you remember to open the vent on dingy fuel tank? Seems a standard thing to do on a new boat. Why did the video stop?? I wanted to hear the rest, lol.

Vent was open, it turned out the needle in the carborator was stuck, Sam took the outboard apart and fixed it and worked really well for a couple days and then died again today 😫 Hahah we were on the pontoon outside the shopping center for about 15 minutes until we got the outboard going and we made it back to the boat with all groceries in tack 🤗 Really good to hear you are enjoying the videos! 💛

Hi at 3:19 is that a crack along the waterline and on that tension cable bracket?

It is a weld line in the aluminium, she's got quite distinct weld lines being unpainted. The previous owners made sure the attachment points for the tension cable were doubled welded properly when made. The angle of the camera does made it look like a crack 😆 The Rigging will need to be replaced as it's original Rigging (2005), we will do the east coast of Queensland and then get the Rigging done before heading overseas.
