Mailspring claims to be the "best email client for Mac, Linux and Windows." Is this true? I don't know. Until recently, I resisted trying Mailspring because it was not fully free and open source. That changed a few days ago which is great! I needed a replacement for Thunderbird.

@@gr33nbits93 Electron is a JavaScript (🤮) framework that enables you to make a "cross-platform" application with JS. It comes at a cost though - your application bundles the entire Chromium browser (and possibly Node?), which in turn makes downloads larger and memory usage go through the roof. Other applications that use Electron include Discord and Signal's "desktop" version.

I fail to see the benefit of using this software. Requiring an account to read/send email that is hosted on my email server seems shady to me personally. People need to earn money, that is understandable, but at 8$ a month it costs more to read your email with this client than host it.

There are many reasons to use a desktop email client. The biggest reasons are (1) sometimes you want to access your emails offline, and (2) most people these days have multiple email addresses, often through multiple providers, so being able to check them in one place is pretty sweet! Oh....and (3) you won't be bombarded with ads like you are in most webmail sites.

At work I have been using mainly neomutt and while amazing and super fast my job just switched over to a new CRM that sends my daily tasks in a really annoying HTML only format that is just unreadable in neomutt. Just this past week I tried out claws, evolution (which has been my goto with my personal emails since I don't live in my personal emails it did the jobbut feels clunky for my work emails) also Geary and Thunderbird. All of them have too many quirks or just don't feel right. I am so looking forward to checking this one out!!! As always Love the videos!

I could not agree more. SaaS certainly has it's place, but the trend to turn every little piece of software (or anything else for that matter) into a subscription is getting out of hand. 5.99 this, 8.99 that, 29.99 for the whole family, it never ends. Heck, they even have subscription plans for womens shoes these days. It is mindboggling really :p

@Matt M I don't mind paying and purchase business licenses for FOSS projects quite regularly. However, a subscription based *email-client* is not a proposition that agrees with me, so I won't be a customer. If I *were* interested in this particular program I would much rather buy it once and then get a new paid release/upgrade later. Not everything needs to be a "service" with a "we are going to milk you forever" sticker.

I used to have Mailspring, really nice design and features. One big problem though, when in idle the app will start using almost 100% of my cpu for no apparent reason, back then I was a more novice computer user and I didn't know what was going on my pc. But I could hear the fans spinning up and the computer lagging a lot. I discovered that Mailspring was the problem and once killed the app everything went normal (cpu usage, ram). Now knowing what electron is and that it was most likely the source of this weird behavior I'm never installing that again. Thunderbird gets the job done and yes I believe it looks good. Thunderbird looks ugly and outdated on older versions, most linux distros are using version 68, and I think this is the main reason of people complaining because of looking outdated. But on the latest version (78) looks quite decent.

Folks from Mailspring are doing a good job, but there are still some things that prevent me from using it: I don't like the beginning of a message in the message list (cannot be disabled) and 8$/month is way too much for some additional features, of which I would use few. It doesn't even have a proper read receipt, but a hidden image - doesn't work in plain text messages.

Hh, DT pronounce Snooze like Snus (with a bit to long U sound), which is a tobacco product used most in Sweden and Scandinavia. ;-) Yes, make an income for a service and develop an open source software to their service are not a OSS problem. It is like it should be done.

Mailspring is one thing. And sure, forgive. But Microsoft....please. We as community need to be careful. We know MS is in this for a long run. They could have ulterior motives. We need to be vigilant. For a long time I will view MS with utmost suspicion.

Mailspring is resource hungry and it gets worse over time. Stay with thunderbird, especially with thunderbird 102 coming out.

@@jorgemarcelo4708 I was going to answer you, but I forgot. Sorry. FYI I'm not native speaker. It would be a good idea to start with the fact that you are using the gmail online client. Let's break this into 2 parts, which is "gmail" and "online". About Gmail: - Gmail is a bit more of a service than a protocol. we like to use protocols in applications we like. - Gmail itself is owned by Google, more and more people are trying to escape their ecosystem for privacy reasons. Check out /r/degoogle - Gmail has features that I have little interest in, but none that I find useful. For example on GMX I have 10 free aliases. - Speaking of aliases, gmail is the most popular provider, so the best names have long been occupied. - As a result, my aliases have 3 letters.... and .it domain for example. About Online: - True native applications are definitely faster (I'm not talking about those based on electron) - I am a web developer and avoid online services as much as possible. They are sluggish. - You need the internet to look at emails. Some people use the mailbox for more than just news, like RSS. - You don't worry that one day someone will lock your account and you'll lose all your data. - People like us do backups. - I am able to send an email with a command from the console. It's convenient. For me. - Gmail online is incredibly slow (it used to not be that way) Web services are mostly created for people who don't want to use a computer, don't like to. A tablet with a keyboard is enough for them, as long as they don't get into technology. You also have to keep in mind that computers are complicated devices, and it's most complicated to simplify them for non-technical people. The most important thing for me is that my system on my computer is made by me on linux, perfectly for my needs. every service works the way i want it to. I created my ecosystem that syncs with my other devices. Google is an ecosystem for people who don't want to create their ecosystem. And they like being a product. Because the fact that it's free means so much that they're selling the information they have about you. Or they hold. Whatever. Even if they don't do anything with it, in case you become, say, an inconvenient politician, then they might already be useful. If you remember the internet 15 years ago, it's good to see how things have changed. Small sites have been dominated by a few large corporations who are a political force because they can manipulate what is displayed to you and use anything related to social engineering. If torrents and "hateful content" have disappeared from google, why should I believe that the same will not happen to other content that interests me? For example in gmail? Compare how easy it is to find torrents in DuckDuckGo. Some time ago I tried to send a .zip to someone and gmail scanned the content to "protect me from a virus". When you try to send something similar via messenenger there's a chance you'll get your account blocked for 24h by "suspicious content" (this is the case with executable files). You can still compare gmail to spotify. I'm a semi-amateur musician. I don't like the way spotify tries to dictate what music I should listen to. It talks about how there is everything out there. In reality there is nothing there. Well unless you listen to podcasts, because that's probably one of the main platforms for that. I have a variety of music on disk in the best quality that I don't get on spotify. I also have vinyl releases converted to digital. Many artists I can't find on spotify at all. They are sorted the way I like them. in an app I like. which is fast, doesn't require internet, is free, open source and allows me to do much more than spotify. it's the same between gmail and mail clients. You still have the issue of apps like discord. It's cool that someone combined fast, lightweight teamspeak and fast, lightweight irc, but they did it in such a way that the app is heavy and you can't do anything meaningful with it if the developers didn't anticipate that. Corporations release sluggish javascript-based applications because it's cheap for them, quality enough to make money, and fast to produce. We look for quality.

@@phloxpaniculata9550 Thanks for your patience, you present really interesting points and now I see the benefits. I've been trying mailspring ("as an experiment") for a month and it really is more convenient. But your insightful comment has shown me that the rabbit hole is even deeper, I'll take some time to educate myself because now I see that this is not only about convenience but also about philosophy. Thank you for your time.

I have kicked the Windows out of my world. Using Kmail, if I am every crazy enough to switch to Gnome - will use Evolution. I guess both of them does everything I want it to do (although KMail configuration is a big pain in the butt). TB has too many limitations.
