AVINASH SINGH, the problem was that India industrialised too quickly in the 1970s, shortly after this film was released. We had thousands of historic cities, towns, villages. Lots of stunning colonial architecture was in the cities. Our temples were vibrant and colourful. The country was once full of clean air, even in 1968 Mumbai the air was clean and the sky blue. Another feature of Indian cities was the huge amount of greenery and green promenades that dotted our cities. Mumbai was full of green parks and the quality of life in the city was very very high. My grandmother has very fond memories playing with her friends in the parks. The economy of India was small, but our country and its cities were beautiful. In the 1970s, India rapidly industrialised. Everybody was getting a job, factories were opening everywhere and the national economy exploded in just 3-4 years. Millions migrated to the cities, and factories opened. In 1974, Mumbai demolished its parks to build slums to house migrant workers, and in 1975, green promenades that lined the major roads were dismantled to widen the roads for huge highways and multi-lane roads. In the late 1970s, towns began demolishing historical architecture to build huge new apartment complexes for migrant workers. By 1979, 11 years after this film was made, the elegance of old Mumbai had vanished under the smog, pollution, dirtiness and density of the new Mumbai. This scene offers basically a chance to remember how India used to look in the 1960s.
