Hi Mark - very dissapointing but as you say, you live and learn - which is what I did this year by growing your namesake i.e. 'markies', up here in Stonehaven. I'd never heard of this variety before - they were reccomended to me by a fellow patient when I was unfortunately, in hospital earlier this year. He worked in the wholesale / commercial potato growing and distribution business and said you couldn't go past this potato as lovely clean / big tubers, little or no scab, a fantastic flavour - better than maris piper or king edward - and the best chipper, baker and roastie going. I was sceptical but thought he's in the trade so should know what he's talking about - and by heck he did as all he said was true - I gave some to a few of my friends to cook and they agreed 😋😋😋

Strange results from you there, Mark! Like we gardeners always say - failure is part of learning and there's always next year (okay two sayings LOL) I really do wish I could offer some advice to you, but I reckon it is just a bad dose of bad luck!

My potatoes have had mixed results. They did well in poor, exposed, unmanured clay soil but in the well manured area they were all infected with wireworm 🤷🏻‍♂️

In the quantity / size of the potatoes this year. Don't you think you have to add the weather factor too? Do you have as much/ little harvest on the allotment as at home?

Hi Mark. Don’t give up on main crop in pots, you can get awesome crops. I had a rubbish year in the main due to blight but for several years I have grown Picasso main crop in pots and they do wonderfully. They give large very tasty potatoes. My sspc potatoes managed to avoid blight and I got a whopper of a harvest. Don’t know that variety yet but they are wonderful baked. I would put your harvests down to the funny old weather this year. Take care. Mags

Hi Mark, noticed the pots are only 3/4 full of compost? Maybe consider making sure the pots have more medium in them....

Hi from NZ. I put half really bad soil, a quarter horse manure, a quarter straw and 4 Worms in my pot of one tuber. I won a competition with 25 good sized potatoes with that mix. The soil was spectacular after 5 months because of the worms.

That's too bad! Still, a lot of other things did well in your plot this year. My in-ground potatoes did well, and I'm drowning in carrots right now. The squash got hit by a bad hailstorm (southern Alberta), and while the plants bounced back, it delayed things too much to get a harvest.

Potatoes in the ground pretty much look after themselves. Potatoes in buckets need care, especially in making sure they get the right amount of water, light and food. I put mine in a warm sunny spot where I see them every day and I get a very reasonable crop. They usually get fed at the same time as the tomatoes, just because that's easy.

I do and because as winter approaches i can bring all the remaining buckets into the polytunnel and harvest as required grow in buckets but you hit the nail on the head about nutrients when growing in buckets the compost only feeds them for a short time unlike growing in a soil bed so they need additional feeding planting and watering not enough

Hi Mark. So many potatoes from half a spud! It was about a 250% return. That's not bad in my books 👍🥔 Elaine 🌱

Aww mark, still better than nothing ey. I would highly recommend 'Cara' maincrop, I do those every year in large fabric bags. About 4-5 per bag is enough and you get nice sized ones from those, but definitely the ones in the most sunniest position do the best.
