I recently assisted family members who were planning their first cruise. As I delved into explaining the dining experience in the main dining room, it struck me how distinct these rooms are among various cruise lines today. The complexity surprised me. Whether you're a first-time cruiser, considering switching cruise lines, or exploring different ships within a line, the tips I shared with them are sure to benefit you.
My initial advice to new cruisers focused on two critical aspects of the main dining room. Firstly, the main dining room's food is part of the fare, available not just for dinner but also for breakfast and lunch. I suggested they prioritize the main dining room for most meals, especially for people with food allergies. The main dining room kitchens have dedicated sections for allergy-friendly preparation, and the maître d' is there to address anyone's dietary needs.
Moving to the buffet, I explained that it becomes a bit more intricate. While there might be designated areas for specific dietary needs, control becomes challenging. I emphasized the importance of informing the cruise line about dietary issues during booking and being explicit about the requirements.
Considering my family interest in a Mediterranean cruise, I highlighted four main dining room differences they should be aware of:
Fixed Dining vs. Anytime Dining: Some cruise lines offer fixed dining times, while others provide flexibility. Fixed dining means a set time for dinner every evening, offering the advantage of consistent table companions and personalized service. Anytime dining provides flexibility but lacks the consistency of staff and tablemates.
Multiple Main Dining Rooms: Certain cruise lines have multiple main dining rooms, and passengers may need to rotate among them. Celebrity Edge class ships, for instance, have four main dining rooms and Discover Princes has 3.
Cabin Grade-Based Dining: Depending on the cabin grade, passengers might have access to different main dining rooms. Celebrity and, Norwegian, for example, has specific dining rooms for different cabin grades.
Dress Codes: Dress codes vary among cruise lines. While some are more relaxed, others may have formal attire requirements. Considering this is crucial when choosing a cruise line. Although most cruise lines these days have a relaxed dress code.
Additionally, making friends with the maître d' early on is essential for securing preferred seating. Do not hesitate to request a table change if they find their initial tablemates aren't a good fit.
I would suggest people explore the diverse menu options. The main dining room's menu typically features rotating daily specials and fixed items. I encouraged them to focus on the changing specials and not feel obligated to order every course. Multiple items of each course were an option, allowing them to customize their dining experience.
