The original theme with the docu-intro spiel is iconic, without question. However, NBC wanted change by the 5th season, and an amped-up version at least made viewers 'feel' as if a change had occurred. As a fan of synth-rock in the mid -80s, I find this revamp highly addicting. Sounds as if Jan Hammer was told to electrify the original track with more drum machines and sequencers. Who and however it was done, I think that it is brilliant.

it's so clean... and it's stereo! love this theme over the original. i have the old dvd set from 2 decades ago and its all sped up because of the bad downscale from NTSC to PAL and mono. i remember as a kid watching these in the late 90s on UK Gold on a crappy CRT and i'd crank this thumper of a tune high. damn shame they pulled the series after Season Five. i much prefer the serious tone of each episode... they made murdok less nutty. and it was nice to see him having a life outside the mental hospital. lol Spoil Sport. in the 90s/00s this and Martial Law was the best.

That's DVD. Not the stereo audio that has been available for years now. The majority of all studio recorded songs that were released as Mono are all Stereo now. FM. It's the future.

That’s not downscale. It was necessary to convert to PAL for American film to play on British TV’s.

I just don't know what made Cannell wanted to have this show to have a theme change. I thought the iconic March and rock bit was perfect! And note that Universal and Cannell had their logos (at the end) in MONO! 2:38

The show was moving close to the nineties but never quite made it because of its March '87 cancellation. Sister show "Hunter" changed their theme song during that same season.

@@drummingdanny84 and at that point, Cannell was also ready to unveil Wiseguy to CBS, JJ Starbuck to NBC and also 21 Jump Street to the new network in town for 1987-88... Fox.
